Joe Joyce returns to the ring Saturday night against unbeaten Russian heavyweight Artem Suslenkov amid growing concerns about whether the 40-year-old should still be fighting.<\/p>\n

Former WBC cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson is among those worried about Joyce\u2019s future, saying the veteran heavyweight is already showing signs of the punishment absorbed during his career and could regret extending it even further.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Joe Joyce, again unfortunately with age you get wisdom,\u201d said Johnny Nelson on talkSPORT Boxing. \u201cHe\u2019s going to regret it when he\u2019s 40 years old, 45, 50 years old and he can\u2019t remember where he put his shoes, and he has all the after-effects of boxing far too long. \u201cFighters sell their soul to the devil and say, \u2018I don\u2019t care what it costs, I\u2019m going in.\u2019 He\u2019s not thinking about his health. He\u2019s not thinking about tomorrow because he\u2019s in that mindset where he\u2019s willing to put everything on the line.\u201d<\/p>\n

The discussion came as Joyce prepares for another comeback after losing four of his last six fights. Once viewed as one of the heavyweight division\u2019s most dangerous contenders, the former Olympic silver medalist has struggled since consecutive knockout defeats to Zhilei Zhang in 2023. He later lost decisions to Derek Chisora and Filip Hrgovic, with his only victories during that stretch coming against Kash Ali and Patrick Korte.<\/p>\n

Nelson also questioned Joyce\u2019s long-term plans, suggesting the veteran no longer appears to be treating each fight as a final payday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re willing to have that one, then that one, then it tells me his mindset is, \u2018I\u2019m in this for the long haul again,’\u201d Nelson said. \u201cI\u2019d rather not see him fight because I care about his health in the future, and I can see signs already.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joyce\u2019s public workout earlier this week also drew criticism after videos circulated online showing him performing slow cartwheels and moving noticeably sluggishly during open media sessions, adding to concerns surrounding his condition heading into Saturday\u2019s bout.<\/p>\n

A victory over Suslenkov would keep Joyce relevant in the heavyweight division, but another defeat would almost certainly intensify calls for the Londoner to consider retirement.<\/p>\n
