A stretch of the M62 motorway remains closed on Sunday morning following a serious collision. Firefighters and police were called to a crash involving two cars late on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

It happened eastbound and led to a closure put in place between junction 20, for Thornham Interchange, and junction 22, for Denshaw, near Saddleworth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes where possible.<\/p>\n

Today – Sunday – the closure remained in place. Traffic reports said accident investigation work was being carried out between the A627(M) at Rochdale<\/a> and the A672, for Rishworth Moor, with diversions in place.<\/p>\n

Images from the scene showed a car flipped over onto its roof on the carriageway.<\/p>\n

Traffic caught within the closure was turned around and released via the rear of the queue, National Highways said.<\/p>\n

A statement said: “The M62<\/a> in Greater Manchester is closed eastbound between J20 (Thornham Interchange) and J22 (Denshaw) due to a collision involving an overturned vehicle which occurred shortly after 11pm on July 11.<\/p>\n

“Emergency services are in attendance, along with National Highways Traffic Officers who are assisting with traffic management.<\/p>\n

“Greater Manchester Police<\/a> are carrying out collision investigation work and the road is expected to remain closed for several hours.<\/p>\n

“Once investigation work is completed, there are also reports of a large amount of debris in the road with recovery expected to be protracted as well.”<\/p>\n
