(Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Perth Zoo science program leader Harriet Mills, who has been heavily involved in numbat rehabilitation, said there was still work to be done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The whole of the zoo is just really proud that we&#8217;ve been able to make this contribution,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t mean that it&#8217;s the end of the story for numbats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bush Heritage Australia conservation manager Bruce Webber said while the status change was encouraging, conservationists should not take the foot off the pedal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the equivalent of going from hurtling towards a cliff, about to jump off, then pausing and standing less than a metre from the edge,&#8221;  he said.Keep cats away<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The World Wide Fund for Nature has listed habitat loss, fire and introduced species as the main catalyst for the numbat population&#8217;s decline and says the animals are still extinct in 99 per cent of their previous habitat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Webber, who is also an executive of the WA feral cats working group, said much more work needed to be done.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man with grey hair wearing blue suit \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/f9f03b125340217e8422b21f2c2a445d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Bruce Webber says work to limit feral cat populations must continue.\u00a0 (Supplied: Bush Heritage Australia)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Numbats only survive in these areas because there&#8217;s a really concerted effort from local groups to suppress foxes and feral cats in these landscapes,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Webber said the simplest way to assist numbat conservation was to contain pet cats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Pet cats roam huge distances, particularly in rural areas,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a light brown cats bares teeth\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/a7287f014675c51e67044ace5b834109.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Feral cats are one of the major threats to numbats.
