<\/p>\nThe Ingalls have moved across the country to start a new life in Midwestern America during the late 19th century. But the \u201cfree\u201d land they were promised isn’t free at all, and that\u2019s not the only hardship coming their way on the often harsh, unforgiving prairies.<\/p>\n

The wholesome reputation of\u00a0Little House\u00a0On\u00a0The\u00a0Prairie\u00a0precedes itself. A mainstay in American culture, the novels published by Laura Ingalls Wilder have sold more than 73 million copies worldwide. The\u00a0\u201970s TV adaptation that followed continues to draw in surprisingly large viewing numbers, over\u00a0five decades\u00a0since it first debuted.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0easy to see why another adaptation appealed. But rather than remake the old series outright, Netflix has instead chosen to reimagine the source material,\u00a0in a bid to modernise this classic tale without losing the essence of what made it so popular. The result is a charming yet\u00a0somewhat flat\u00a0adaptation that often plays it safe, trying\u00a0its\u00a0darnedest to appeal to everyone at once.<\/p>\n
Between the sweeping prairie shots and some old-school episodic charm, this is a decent enough start to the Ingalls\u2019\u00a0saga…<\/p>\n
At least admirable attempts are made to expand the story, exploring the impact that white settlers like the Ingalls had on local Osage families. Other characters of colour, including the book\u2019s Black doctor, George Tann (Jocko Sims), are also included after\u00a0being\u00a0omitted in NBC\u2019s version, but\u00a0there’s\u00a0a reluctance to really reckon with what minorities would be facing at this point in history. Just because\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a family show\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0mean that Little House\u00a0On\u00a0The\u00a0Prairie\u00a0should hold back as much as it does on that front, especially when characters like White Sun (Peter Pan And Wendy<\/a> star Alyssa Wapanat\u00e2hk) are often more interesting than the Ingalls themselves.<\/p>\n The exception is 11-year-old Alice Halsey (Lessons In Chemistry<\/a>),\u00a0whose take on Laura, a beloved staple of fiction, brings much-needed spark to the family and show alike. Skywalker Hughes, meanwhile, most recently seen in Andrew Stanton’s In The Blink Of An Eye<\/a>, shares relatable chemistry with her as Laura\u2019s sister Mary. Only Crosby Fitzgerald disappoints as\u00a0mother\u00a0Caroline,\u00a0her\u00a0stilted performance\u00a0contrasting with the\u00a0energy everyone else brings. Still,\u00a0there’s\u00a0plenty to enjoy overall. Between the sweeping prairie shots and some old-school episodic charm, this is a decent enough start to the Ingalls\u2019\u00a0saga,\u00a0given how much pressure there\u00a0is on\u00a0this show to succeed.<\/p>\n For such a risky venture, Little House On The Prairie plays it a little too safe.
