It\u2019s been labelled \u2018Alcaranu\u2019 by fans and scrutinised by pundits. But now, the potential mixed doubles partnership between Emma Raducanu<\/a> and Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> at this month\u2019s US Open<\/a> could be in serious doubt.<\/p>\n

The pair are scheduled to join forces for the revamped format in Flushing Meadows. However, the current Cincinnati Open could now well scupper that plan. While Raducanu is already out of the tournament<\/a>, Alcaraz faces Andrey Rublev tonight for a place in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Despite searing temperatures in Ohio, the tournament has also been dealt a backlog of matches this week after extreme storms curtailed play on Tuesday<\/a>. The men\u2019s final is scheduled for Monday, with the Spaniard and world No.1 Jannik Sinner<\/a> on course for another showdown following their epic battles at the French Open and Wimbledon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sinner has agreed to play with Emma Navarro in the mixed doubles event, which this year takes place during the week before the US Open. However, it starts less than 20 hours after the Cincinnati Open final, which could be delayed if further storms hit.<\/p>\n

Another gruelling match between the world\u2019s two best male players is likely to leave them in doubt for the mixed doubles. Both took a prolonged break following SW19 this year, citing fatigue, and would have noted the likes of Coco Gauff<\/a> opting to skip the team event to focus on her individual preparation.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, it was just because I know the free week of the US Open is already packed for me, for sponsor things, and it was just like a whole other thing,\u201d she explained. \u201cSo, I didn\u2019t want to waste mental energy on that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former British player Barry Fulcher has cast further doubt on big-name stars competing, despite being confirmed by organisers. He told Tennis 365<\/a>: \u201cThis exhibition event will be great fun, but it is not a Grand Slam and it shouldn\u2019t be viewed as such.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just about the prize money, but more about removing a mixed doubles Grand Slam opportunity.
