New Zealand actor Sam Neill, known for the films \u201cJurassic Park\u201d and \u201cThe Piano\u201d, has died aged 78, his family said.<\/p>\n
His death in Sydney was \u201csudden and unexpected\u201d, according to a statement posted to the actor\u2019s social media page on Monday.<\/p>\n
In 2023, Neill disclosed he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.<\/p>\n
His family\u2019s statement said he \u201cremained cancer free\u201d when he died and did not specify a cause of death.<\/p>\n
Neill was a smooth, elegant and versatile actor whose career moved from art film to blockbuster, as he dodged velociraptors in \u201cJurassic Park\u201d to playing Holly Hunter\u2019s husband in \u201cThe Piano\u201d.<\/p>\n
He was one of a host of actors and directors who achieved international fame after an explosion of Australian films that began in the late 1970s, a list that includes Paul Hogan, Mel Gibson, Geoffrey Rush, Russell Crowe, Jane Campion, Peter Weir and Gillian Armstrong.<\/p>\n

Neill\u2019s acting career spanned dozens of roles in TV and film, including \u201cPeaky Blinders\u201d, \u201cThe Hunt for Red October\u201d and \u201cOmen III: The Final Conflict\u201d.<\/p>\n
Luxon leads tributes<\/p>\n
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon hailed the actor as \u201cone of the greats\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe started out when there was \u2060barely a film \u2060industry in this country to speak of. For more than fifty years he took \u200cNew Zealand stories to the world and his talents helped make \u200cour \u200cfilm industry into what it is today \u2013 one of our greatest cultural exports,\u201d Luxon wrote in a social media post.<\/p>\n
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also paid tribute to Neill.<\/p>\n
\u201cWry and dry, thoughtful and laconic, Sam \u200cfought illness with the same dignity, humour and conviction that gave strength to his every performance. He will be much mourned and long remembered. May he rest \u2060in peace,\u201d he wrote on social media.<\/p>\n
Neill was born in Northern Ireland in 1947 but moved to New Zealand as a child.<\/p>\n
He was born \u201cNigel John Dermot\u201d but swapped the name in favour of the nickname \u201cSam\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI encouraged the nickname because I thought I\u2019d be slightly less likely to be victimised,\u201d he told New Zealand\u2019s Otago Daily Times.<\/p>\n
His family settled in Dunedin on the South Island, and he was sent to boarding school in Christchurch. After college, he took the lead in \u201cSleeping Dogs\u201d in 1977, the first feature made in New Zealand in more than a decade.<\/p>\n
Neill\u2019s other film roles included playing a Soviet submarine officer who memorably dreams of a home in Montana in \u201cThe Hunt for Red October\u201d and an investigator in director John Carpenter\u2019s \u201cIn the Mouth of Madness\u201d.<\/p>\n
The actor became known in New Zealand as a modest and unassuming person who didn\u2019t embrace celebrity.<\/p>\n
