{"id":689311,"date":"2026-07-13T13:34:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T13:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/689311\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T13:34:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T13:34:10","slug":"sir-nick-faldo-hits-out-at-controversial-open-ticket-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/689311\/","title":{"rendered":"Sir Nick Faldo hits out at controversial Open ticket prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tGolf\u2019s governing bodies have been under fire for inflation-busting ticket prices, but three-time Champion Golfer Sir Nick Faldo believes he has a much better solution that works for everyone\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Sir Nick Faldo says he is \u201cdisappointed\u201d to see how expensive ticket prices have become at golf\u2019s biggest events. <\/p>\n<p>The R&amp;A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.todays-golfer.com\/news-and-events\/majors\/the-open-championship\/how-to-get-tickets-2027-open-championship-st-andrews-prices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">came under fire<\/a> recently for putting a \u00a3190 price tag on the final round of the 155th Open at St Andrews, while Ryder Cup Europe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.todays-golfer.com\/news-and-events\/ryder-cup\/2027-ticket-prices-revealed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faced similar criticism<\/a> when it was confirmed that tickets for next year\u2019s showdown at Adare Manor will set the average punter back \u20ac499.<\/p>\n<p>And Faldo, talking to TG ahead of his various duties at Royal Birkdale this week, can\u2019t understand why the fans are the ones being used to boost the coffers. <\/p>\n<p>After a brief moment of nostalgia to recall a time when you could rock up on the day, pay your \u00a315 and walk in, Faldo sighs. \u201cIt\u2019s a shame that they feel that the tickets is a way to be profitable,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p>And when TG ventures for an alternative solution, the six-time major champion leans into his camera and raises his voice just enough to make it known that he\u2019s not joking.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo and find another sponsor that will cover it!\u201d Faldo, who lifted the Claret Jug in 1987, 1990 and 1992, says. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to believe the marketing team should be able to sell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.todays-golfer.com\/news-and-events\/majors\/the-open-championship\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Open<\/a> and the Ryder Cup. And it would be nice for a company to say, \u2018We are going to subsidize the ticket prices for the fans.\u2019 That would be a very good PR touch, I would have thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m disappointed. You have to look after the fans. Make the money corporately \u2013 which you\u2019ve got to be able to do that at those two events. Crumbs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were they up to, now? Twenty bucks for a beer at the Ryder Cup? It\u2019s what\u2019s so good about Augusta. They don\u2019t rip you off with the food and drinks prices.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"876\" height=\"584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/sir-nick-faldo-open-championship.jpg\" alt=\"Three-time Open champion Sir Nick Faldo\" class=\"wp-image-317138\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Regardless of where the money comes from, any sporting event has got to be, as Faldo puts it, \u201cfor the fan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want it to be corporate,\u201d he explains. \u201cI\u2019ve been to Super Bowls, which is all corporate, and it\u2019s terrible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately, moons ago, I went to Liverpool versus Manchester United at Wembley for an FA Cup final. I mean, talk about an atmosphere!
