Russia has launched a new ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, the city\u2019s mayor said, hours after \u2060Ukraine and nine European countries announced an air defence coalition aimed at countering the ballistic missile threat from Moscow.<\/p>\n
The Ukrainian capital\u2019s mayor Vitali Klitschko said early on Tuesday that air defence units were attempting to repel the attacks. He added that fires had broken out in the Holosiivskyi district of the city after the attacks.<\/p>\n

The attacks are part of a Russian escalation in recent weeks that has led to repeated attacks on Ukraine, as well as Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory. At least nine people were killed<\/a> on Sunday in attacks in both Ukraine and Russia.<\/p>\n The latest attacks on Kyiv highlight the increasing danger posted to Ukraine by Russian ballistic missiles, which travel at several times the speed of sound.<\/p>\n Dozens of heads of state were in Paris on Monday at a meeting of the \u201cCoalition of the Willing\u201d to discuss how to support Ukraine and pressure Russia to end the war, now well into its fifth year. The coalition\u2019s plans include the development of a new anti-ballistic missile system as an alternative and cheaper solution to the United States\u2019 Patriot system.<\/p>\n The ongoing war in Ukraine has raised concern across Europe about the potential threat from the east.<\/p>\n Overall, 10 countries, along \u2060\u2060with a dozen firms from the defence sector, met to discuss what they called the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition.<\/p>\n \u201cWe believe that the protection of Europe requires a global solution of integrated missile defence architecture to deter and defeat future missile threats, developed through collective effort, technological openness and trusted industrial cooperation,\u201d the \u2060\u2060leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and the UK said in a statement.<\/p>\n \u201cIt will complement existing ballistic missile defence systems, including sovereign European solutions already acquired, or to be acquired by participating countries.\u201d<\/p>\n Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pleaded with allies for more weapons and pushed Europe to work with it on a joint anti-ballistic air defence system.<\/p>\n Kyiv has enjoyed considerable success with intensified drone attacks inside Russia, targeting so-called \u2018shadow fleet\u2019 tankers,<\/a> oil facilities and weapons factories.<\/p>\n In response, Russia has increased its missile and drone barrage<\/a> against civilian targets, killing dozens, including at least four people last weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n Monday\u2019s talks in Paris came days after a NATO summit that aimed to show transatlantic unity and long-term support for Ukraine.<\/p>\n Zelenskyy had said prior to Monday\u2019s meeting that several countries were likely to formalise the Freyja project \u2013 Ukraine\u2019s attempt to build a European-backed, lower-cost alternative to the Patriot system.<\/p>\n
