It\u2019s no small project to found a new soci\u00adety, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when you\u2019re doing it on the scale of a place like Rus\u00adsia. Apart from the con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable prac\u00adti\u00adcal chal\u00adlenges it entails, there\u2019s also the need for sym\u00adbols bold enough to rep\u00adre\u00adsent the under\u00adly\u00ading ide\u00adal. The avant-garde artist Vladimir Tatlin<\/a> took it upon him\u00adself to cre\u00adate just such a sym\u00adbol in the years after the Russ\u00adian Rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion. The result is offi\u00adcial\u00adly known as the Mon\u00adu\u00adment to the Third Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal, named for the orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion tasked with the pro\u00admo\u00adtion of world com\u00admu\u00adnism (often abbre\u00advi\u00adat\u00aded to Com\u00adintern). But it\u2019s more com\u00admon\u00adly referred to as Tatlin\u2019s Tow\u00ader<\/a>, per\u00adhaps in trib\u00adute to the artist\u2019s par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar vision \u2014 one too ambi\u00adtious for its real-life con\u00adstruc\u00adtion even to begin.<\/p>\n

Indeed, it would stand taller than the yet-to-be-con\u00adstruct\u00aded Empire State Build\u00ading, at least if you don\u2019t count its anten\u00adna. Con\u00adsist\u00ading of \u201ca con\u00adtract\u00ading dou\u00adble helix that spi\u00adrals upward, sup\u00adport\u00aded by a huge diag\u00ado\u00adnal gird\u00ader,\u201d Tatlin\u2019s Tow\u00ader would con\u00adtain four sub-struc\u00adtures, each rotat\u00ading at a dif\u00adfer\u00adent speed.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Yes, rotat\u00ading, and \u201ccom\u00adplet\u00ading a full rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion in accor\u00addance with the impor\u00adtance of the insti\u00adtu\u00adtions con\u00adduct\u00ading their busi\u00adness on the inside,\u201d as Tim Brinkof writes at Big Think<\/a>. \u201cThe cube that con\u00adtains the leg\u00adis\u00adla\u00adture would have com\u00adplet\u00aded a full rota\u00adtion once per year. Alas, though many par\u00adty offi\u00adcials approved of Tatlin\u2019s design, they com\u00admand\u00aded noth\u00ading like the resources to build it: \u201cRus\u00adsia would go bank\u00adrupt if it tried to acquire the insane amounts of steel and iron need\u00aded for the tow\u00ader\u2019s skele\u00adtal frame\u00adwork.\u201d Per\u00adhaps Leon Trot\u00adsky, one of the pro\u00adjec\u00adt\u2019s dis\u00adsenters, was right when he called it \u201cimprac\u00adti\u00adcal and roman\u00adtic\u201d \u2014 and per\u00adhaps those are the very qual\u00adi\u00adties that keep Tatlin\u2019s Tow\u00ader an object of fas\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtion more than a cen\u00adtu\u00adry lat\u00ader.<\/p>\n
