Wimbledon winners Jannik Sinner and Linda Noskova have been slapped with whopping multi-million pound tax bills after bagging \u00a33.6m apiece at the All England Club.<\/p>\n
Sinner defended his title with a four-set win over French Open champion Alexander Zverev on Sunday while Noskova toppled Czech compatriot Karolina Muchova in three sets on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Both picked up \u00a33.6m in SW19 \u2013 with Grand Slams offering equal prize money for singles titles \u2013 but will be hit by HMRC because of \u201cnuanced and specific tax rules for non-resident sportspersons\u201d, according to a Menzies LLP partner.<\/p>\n
\u201cAssuming they are tax residents in Monaco and the Czech Republic, the UK tax treatment of their Wimbledon prize money is broadly the same as for a UK resident,\u201d Craig Hughes<\/a> added.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cInitially tax may be withheld at source at a rate of 20 per cent, which on prize money of \u00a33.6m equates to \u00a3720,000. However, this withholding is a payment on account of the player\u2019s ultimate UK tax liability, and assuming the full \u00a33.6m is taxable in the UK, with no deductible expenses and no additional UK-attributable endorsement income, the final UK income tax liability could exceed \u00a31.6m.<\/p>\n \u201cThis would leave around \u00a32m after UK income tax, before taking into account agent commissions, coaching costs, travel expenses, and other professional costs.\u201d<\/p>\n Huge Wimbledon tax bill<\/p>\n Overseas players \u2013 like Sinner and Noskova \u2013 may then get hit with additional taxes at home, while any potential UK player would be slapped with National Insurance charges.<\/p>\n Many of the world\u2019s top players skip the pre-tournament grass court tournaments in the UK \u2013 such as the HSBC Championships<\/a> at Queen\u2019s Club, as well as Eastbourne and Edgbaston \u2013 to minimise the amount of time they spend earning income on these shores.<\/p>\n Many head to the continent before arriving for the two-week Championship fortnight.<\/p>\n \u201cThe UK seeking to tax income generated from high-profile sporting performances taking place here makes sense,\u201d Hughes added. \u201cHowever, the issue of proportionality is nuanced.\u00a0<\/p>\n
