Essex Men travel to Southampton to take on Hampshire Hawks in a Vitality Blast quarter-final, with a place at Finals Day in Birmingham on the line.<\/p>\n
Buoyed by a dominant victory over Surrey at the Kia Oval on Sunday, Simon Harmer’s side head to the Utilita Bowl full of confidence as they look to continue their impressive Blast campaign. With a semi-final at Edgbaston awaiting the winner, the Eagles will be aiming to produce another strong performance and book their place at Finals Day on Saturday.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, Matt Critchley continued his week of spin wizardry as Essex thrashed Surrey by eight wickets to book their place in the Vitality Blast knockout stages.<\/p>\n
The leg spinner followed up his 4-16 against Hampshire 48 hours earlier with 3-16 to help bowl out the hosts for 123 with three balls of their 20 overs unused. Charlie Bennett provided good support with 2-13, Josh Philippe (33) and Chris Jordan (25) the only Surrey batters threatening to break the shackles.<\/p>\n
Essex, who\u2019d needed a win to progress from the South Group made light work of the chase, Michael Pepper leading the run charge with an unbeaten 71 (3 6s, 6 4s). Both sides will now have away ties in the quarter-finals to be staged on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The big question: Can the Vitality Blast revitalise Hampshire\u2019s season? The opening six matches in the Rothesay County Championship have been an unmitigated nightmare for the county. But in T20 cricket, the Hawks are a well-oiled machine, and the Blast\u2019s arrival could jolt everything back into gear and rebuild the confidence of those who need a pick-me-up.<\/p>\n
Wildcard watch: Toby Albert. Last year\u2019s Vitality Blast top scorer was surprisingly overlooked at the Hundred Auction. Moved up to open, Albert piled on the runs with six half-centuries and was a key cog in the Hawks reaching the final. If he continues with his ramps, flicks, general power and tidy wicketkeeping, he will be a frontrunner for a Wildcard.<\/p>\n
Final thought: Losing last year\u2019s final hurt, but Hampshire haven\u2019t been successful in the Blast by licking their wounds. They will be gunning for revenge and to become the first four-time champions. The squad, as ever, looks finely balanced. You know exactly what you are getting from James Vince, Chris Wood and Liam Dawson and the overseas players have good experience. The likes of Joe Weatherley, Scott Currie and Toby Albert know their roles, while Ben Mayes and Manny Lumsden are raw and ready if called upon.<\/p>\n

Matt Critchley continued his 2026 domination over Hampshire Hawks as Essex kept Vitality Blast men\u2019s competition quarter-final qualification in their own hands.<\/p>\n
Critchley, who thumped Hampshire around with the bat in both Rothesay County Championship matches earlier in the season, claimed four for 16 with his leg spin before scoring the winning runs in his 27 not out.<\/p>\n
Shane Snater also picked up three wickets as the already-qualified Hawks crumpled to get rolled out for 130.<\/p>\n
Paul Walter\u2019s half-century made sure the chase was simply navigated ahead of Essex\u2019s trip group finale at the Kia Oval \u2013 where a win against quarter-final-bound Surrey would take them to the knockouts.<\/p>\n
