French rail company SNCF said on Sunday evening there were delays of up to six hours for trains arriving at or leaving from Paris’s Gare de Lyon.

As of Monday morning, around 15 people had been evacuated from their homes and firefighters are still battling to contain the blaze.

Pyrénées-Orientales

The wildfire that burned nearly 5,000 hectares in the Pyrénées-Orientales has been declared under control but is still burning.

“More favourable weather conditions”, notably with a drop in temperatures and an increase in humidity, has helped the firefighting effort.

The préfecture also announced that access to the last remaining villages still closed following the evacuations linked to the Trévillach fire would be reopened on Friday. Residents of the six villages were able to return to their homes at 2 pm. They were, however, urged to remain vigilant.

Drôme

The fire burning in the mountains above the town of Die, in the Drôme département, has burned an estimated 3,700 hectares, according to the latest update from firefighters.

After 10 days of battling the blaze, emergency services said they had remained fully mobilised to bring the fire under control. While cooler night-time conditions had reduced the fire’s intensity, officials warned it was expected to become more active again as temperatures rose later that day.

Marseille

Six hectares have been destroyed by a fire in the 11th arrondissement of Marseille. The fire was under control at the end of the day on Friday.

Around 90 maritime firefighters, 40 vehicles, as well as two helicopters, four Canadair aircraft and one Dash aircraft were deployed to tackle the blaze. No injuries were reported.

Indre

One of the largest wildfires in the history of the Indre department, which had burned through 900 hectares of vegetation since Wednesday, was contained and brought under control, the préfecture told AFP.

Although the situation stabilised, the risk of flare-ups had not been ruled out, the same source said, adding that the total area burned was still being assessed. No one was injured and no homes were destroyed.

The local prefect announced a ban on all walks in forests and the cancellation of all Bastille Day fireworks displays scheduled for July 14th.

Savoie

A fire was raging in the Alpine département of Savoie in south-eastern France. The fire broke out on June 24th following a thunderstorm on the slopes of the Tour du Merle, in the commune of Planay, the préfecture stated.

The authorities stated that the fire was located in an area that is very difficult to access, featuring scree slopes and rocky cliffs.

Although the wildfire had initially been spreading slowly, the situation deteriorated rapidly, forcing authorities to close the RD915 and RD91D roads on Tuesday. As a result, the popular tourist villages of Pralognan-la-Vanoise and Planay became inaccessible by road.

Ahead of the weekend, local tourism officials asked accommodation providers to contact guests and advise them not to travel to Pralognan-la-Vanoise to avoid overcrowding around the village while emergency services dealt with the fire.

Earlier this week, a 22-year-old volunteer fireman lost his life while working on the ground to stop the flames.

Stay up to date

Residents can monitor active wildfires through the government’s Feux de forêt website and app, which provides real-time information on the location and status of fires across France.

Google Maps also displays some active wildfire locations when users search for “wildfires” and zoom out to view France, as well as listing fire related road closures.

According to a new wildfire risk map published on this week by AXA Climate, wildfires in France are expected to become both more frequent and more intense across the country by the end of the century.

The projections, obtained by French media France Inter, are based on a scenario in which average temperatures in France rise by up to 4C by 2100. The analysis by AXA Climate, the insurer’s climate adaptation division, suggests that wildfire risk will no longer be confined to the traditionally vulnerable Mediterranean regions but will increasingly affect the whole of France.

Wildfires have already ravaged several parts of France with thousands of hectares burned, including in a forest just…

[22
1397,90,56,54,55
post-692120","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
