{"id":692122,"date":"2026-07-15T01:17:24","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T01:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/692122\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T01:17:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T01:17:24","slug":"indias-tech-services-giant-hcl-is-getting-into-the-ai-datacenter-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/692122\/","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s tech services giant HCL is getting into the AI datacenter business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"kicker \" style=\"\">off prem<\/p>\n<p class=\"subtitle \" style=\"\">Starting small with $37m and maybe 50MW but reckons full-stack service plan can succeed<\/p>\n<p>Indian tech services giant and retro software house HCL has decided to get into the AI datacenter business.<\/p>\n<p>The company yesterday revealed its plan in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcltech.com\/sites\/default\/files\/en\/investors\/3098\/AIdatacentre.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announcement<\/a> [PDF] released alongside its Q1 results, which included news of three-percent year-over-year revenue growth to $3.65 billion and 20 percent growth in net income which reached $488 million.<\/p>\n<p>CEO C. Vijayakumar also pointed to 62 percent year-over-year revenue growth for a segment HCL calls \u201cAdvanced AI\u201d that encompasses building its own AI platforms.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO said HCL\u2019s strategy is to \u201cBenefit disproportionately from the AI-native and AI-amplified opportunities\u201d because they \u201ctogether represent the fastest growing pool of enterprise spend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company has therefore decided to get into the datacenter business and has found \u20b93,500 crore ($36.5 million) to put toward facilities it says have \u201cpotential to scale to 50MW of capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not a vast facility \u2013 just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/ai-and-ml\/2026\/07\/14\/zucks-ai-ambitions-put-meta-on-course-to-become-americas-next-big-cloud-provider\/5270758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">one <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/ai-and-ml\/2026\/07\/14\/zucks-ai-ambitions-put-meta-on-course-to-become-americas-next-big-cloud-provider\/5270758\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of Meta\u2019s datacenters<\/a> will host 50GW of kit \u2013 but Vijayakumar said HCL can make it relevant by using its existing software to offer \u201cfull-stack\u201d infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest opportunity is not to rent AI, but to own the full stack,\u201d the CEO said. \u201cThe datacenters that compute the models built to address client-specific needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a business which is shifting from physical infrastructure to higher value AI-ready solutions,\u201d he added. \u201cWe will create full-stack offerings by combining our capabilities across AI datacenter design, DevOps, and cloud operations, as well as a software portfolio with our new datacenter business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HCL\u2019s focus appears to be on Indian customers, as Vijayakumar said the datacenter investment will \u201cposition us as a key enabler of India\u2019s sovereign AI ecosystem, expanding our presence in the fastest-growing market among largest economies with differentiated offerings around sovereign cloud, secure AI, and managed AI infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CEO said HCL is already \u201cin advanced discussions with clients to ensure we start with certain level of committed consumption from day one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company didn\u2019t say where it will build its bit barns, when they might come online, or how it will secure energy supply \u2013 an important consideration given we yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/personal-tech\/2026\/07\/13\/lenovo-denies-using-banned-chinese-ssds-where-theyre-not-allowed\/5270212\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> on an effort to locate a datacenter in renewable-energy-rich Bhutan to serve Indian customers.<\/p>\n<p>Vijayakumar also revealed that HCL booked $2.4 billion of new business in the quarter, a record.
