{"id":694138,"date":"2026-07-16T03:43:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T03:43:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/694138\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T03:43:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T03:43:11","slug":"boy-14-charged-with-terror-offence-after-alleged-plans-to-target-two-mosques","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/694138\/","title":{"rendered":"Boy, 14, charged with terror offence after alleged plans to target two mosques"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">A 14-year-old boy has been charged with an offence linked to \u201cextreme right-wing terrorism\u201d after police discovered an alleged plan to target two London mosques.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">The child was initially arrested at an address on suspicion of criminal damage to a vehicle, but officers searching the location found \u201ca number of documents of concern\u201d, the Metropolitan Police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">He is accused of planning to target the two places of worship in Sutton, south London, which are both being supported by specialist officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">The boy, who was arrested in the south London area, has been charged with preparation of terrorist acts on or before July 9, as well as racially aggravated damage to property by allegedly damaging a car window on or before June 20, the force said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Police have also contacted the victim linked to the damaged vehicle, which was also in Sutton. <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Subscribe free to<a class=\"qNUzV q7LZa\" href=\"https:\/\/itvnews.substack.com\/\" data-testid=\"fecp-link-anchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> our weekly newsletter <\/a>for exclusive and original coverage from ITV News. Direct to your inbox every Friday morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Detective Chief Superintendent Nick Blackburn, in charge of local policing for the south London area, said: \u201cThese charges come just days after 12 people were arrested for a suspected threat to an Islamic festival in Suffolk and a man was arrested for an alleged assault outside a mosque in Leyton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">He added: \u201cWe should not underestimate the cumulative impact of incidents of this nature on the Muslim community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">The child, who cannot be named because of his age, has been remanded in custody and will appear at Westminster Magistrates\u2019 Court on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) London, said they are seeing an increasing number of children and young people in their casework.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">In a statement issued by the Met, she said: \u201cThis is a very serious terrorism charge against a young boy and likely to be highly concerning to the public and the local community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">\u201cWe know this will be particularly concerning to the Muslim community and we are working closely with the venues affected to ensure they are kept updated and to provide advice, support and reassurance, and this will continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Police have increased patrols in affected areas, and the Met is working closely with counter-terror police on the investigation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">There is not believed to be \u201cany enduring or wider threat\u201d \u2013 and police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incidents, the Met added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">This is a breaking story, more to follow<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Want a quick and expert briefing on the biggest news stories?
