After 15 years and little movement, Tintin 2 is finally getting underway, as Peter Jackson announces he\u2019s to take over from Steven Spielberg as director.<\/p>\n
Update: Peter Jackson has confirmed his plans to direct a sequel to 2011\u2019s The Adventures Of Tintin. Speaking to Gold Derby<\/a> (via World of Reel<\/a>, the filmmaker confirmed much of what he said at Cannes in May (see below): that he\u2019s been working on a script with writer partner Fran Walsh (which is now finished).<\/p>\n The new bit, though, is that he\u2019s now confirmed that Tintin 2 (official title pending) will be the next film he\u2019ll direct \u2013 making it his first feature film in 12 years.<\/p>\n After more than a decade away from feature film-making,\u00a0Peter Jackson<\/a>\u00a0sounds ready to get back into action.<\/p>\n Speaking via Zoom\u00a0with longtime collaborator Richard Taylor for a retrospective story commemorating the 30th anniversary of his first Hollywood film,\u00a0The Frighteners, Jackson indicated that his next project as director will be the long-awaited follow-up to Steven Spielberg\u2019s\u00a0The Adventures of Tintin<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cFran and I have been writing a script for the next\u00a0Tintin\u00a0film because 15 years ago, Steven Spielberg directed a\u00a0Tintin\u00a0film and I produced it,\u201d Jackson said.\u00a0\u201cThe idea was that then I was supposed to go straight onto a second one, and we\u2019d swap the roles, so I\u2019d direct the second one and he\u2019d produce it. It\u2019s just taken 15 years to get there, unfortunately, a bit late. But it\u2019s a timeless story.\u00a0So\u00a0we just wrapped up. So probably the next film that I\u2019d\u00a0actually direct\u00a0is a\u00a0Tintin\u00a0movie.\u201d<\/p>\n Is the new Tintin still a combined adaptation of The Seven Crystal Balls and its follow-up book, Prisoners Of The Sun? While receiving an honarary Palme d\u2019Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the Lord Of The Rings filmmaker revealed that the sequel is an \u201cactive, real thing.\u201d<\/p>\n So active, in fact, that he and writer partner Fran Walsh have been writing the script in a hotel room on the French Riviera while everyone else eats over-priced lunch on the Croissette.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been working with Fran on another\u00a0Tintin\u00a0script,\u201d he said, per Screen Daily<\/a>. \u201cI was writing it in the hotel room here. It\u2019s an active real thing, and I\u2019m getting back into the Tintin world, and I actually love it.\u201d<\/p>\n Steven Spielberg directed the CG-animated 2011 film, while Peter Jackson served as co-producer; Jackson had long said he was going to direct the follow-up \u2013 something he sheepishly brought up himself. <\/p>\n
