Plymouth Argyle players were put through their paces in a gruelling boxing training session at Legends ABC in Plymouth, under the guidance of coach and former professional boxer Darren Townley

Plymouth Argyle players swapped the football for a medicine ball this week, as they were put through a gruelling training session at a Plymouth boxing gym.

The Pilgrims’ squad had a session under former professional boxer Darren Townley at Legends ABC, which is based on the Pomphlett Farm Industrial Estate in Plymstock.

Townley said the session on Monday was set up by strength and conditioning coach John Lucas, who has returned to Argyle ahead of their 2026-27 League One campaign.

Lucas was previously at Home Park during the tenure of Ryan Lowe before leaving for Salford City and then Perth Glory in Australia, but is well known to Townley having trained at the boxing gym himself.

Townley said: “It’s the third season that they’ve had strength and conditioning coach John Lucas, and he is a really nice guy and comes down and trains in our gym anyway and does one-to-ones with me.

“And he suggested it again because he thinks it’s really beneficial for the lads when they come down and train with us.

“I think they showed that in the last few seasons as well, with Ryan Lowe and Steven Schumacher as well, they had two cracking seasons as well.

“They [Lowe and Schumacher] both came down and did sessions with me, and brought the team down; we even went to the pitch and did a session out on the Argyle training ground with them,

“He’s said all the lads really enjoyed it, so hopefully we will do that again.”

Townley said he had the players doing explosive bag drills and even some sparring.

“They smashed it to be fair, they did really well,” he said.

“That’s the third season we’ve had them in now and they worked really hard.”

He added: “It’s a different kind of fitness, it’s strength, upper body, rotation.

“We did an hour and 10 minute session, we did some bag work and explosive bag work drills, and John said he was happy for us to give them a really hard session, so we even got them gloved up and had them doing a bit of a body spar as well which was quite good.

“It really worked well for them because they really felt it, and then we did a mad circuit at the end for about 20 minutes with a lot of upper body stuff.”

Townley said there were a couple of the players who could even make useful pugiists.

“There were a few to be fair!” he said.

“I usually find that with the Argyle lads – they are naturally gifted sportsmen anyway and pick it up quick.

“You get your average person come in the gym and it takes them a while to pick it up, but it seems that the Argyle boys just pick it up quick.”

Plymouth Argyle players swapped the football for a medicine ball this week, as they were put through a…

[41
2560,165155,129309,103193,101,56,54,55
post-695146","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-boxing","tag-boxing","tag-home-park","tag-plymouth-argyle","tag-plymstock","tag-sports","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
