Co Antrim residents have been left fuming after being notified of changes to the way green food waste bags are delivered – a move that they’ve branded “an absolute joke”.<\/p>\n
Previously, residents attached the council’s red tag to the handle their brown bin to signal their request for a new roll of liners as and when they needed them.<\/p>\n
However, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough<\/a> took to Facebook on Wednesday to announce that residents will now only receive two rolls of green bags a year – one roll (30 liners) during July\/August, and one roll at the start of December.<\/p>\n The post read: “Residents will receive their annual supply of green food waste bags through two deliveries each year, one in summer and one in December.<\/p>\n “Food waste bags will be delivered by collection crews when your brown bin is presented on your scheduled collection day during designated periods. We\u2019ll let you know in advance via our social media and website when deliveries are taking place.<\/p>\n “During delivery periods, please put your brown bin out for collection, even if it\u2019s not full, to ensure you receive your liners. For those who need more liners, additional rolls are available from council civic buildings, leisure centres and household recycling centres.”<\/p>\n They added: “This change will help us manage resources more efficiently while continuing to support residents in recycling food waste.”<\/p>\n The public were clearly enraged by the the decision, leaving hundreds of angry comments on the social media post.<\/p>\n “So basically works out at just over 1 green bag a week, also a lot of people myself included are unable to get to any the places to get extra bags,” one person wrote.<\/p>\n Another said: “Seriously, I thought this was July? Not 1st April… Total joke.”<\/p>\n A third added: “You want me to recycle, you provide me with the means – or it’s going into the black bin.”<\/p>\n “I’m sorry but I will not be recycling anymore, it will be going in my black bin… Another cost cutting exercise at the expense of the ratepayer,” another echoed.<\/p>\n Someone else asked: “Will we get a rate reduction seen as we are collecting our own bags now as well as separating our recycling for you?” Another person raised a valid point, saying: “What if your not on social media to see delivery dates?”<\/p>\n Despite the furore, a spokesperson for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council said the change brings the area into line with neighbouring boroughs.<\/p>\n When Belfast Live <\/a>put the issues raised by residents to the council, they said: “The Council has changed the way food waste caddy liners are provided to residents. Households will now receive one roll of liners twice a year, with extra liners available from a range of Council facilities when needed.
