Data from Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) showed seven sewage discharge events at location DCWW848, a Welsh Water outfall, in the past three months.

Each event reportedly lasted between 15 and 30 minutes, with incidents recorded in late May and July.

Frances Cauldhame, a Rogerstone resident, said: “There’s not been any rain, absolutely no excuse for dumping sewage in this weather.”

Others noted that “pollution” along the river is an ongoing issue.

Maria Jerman said: “This is not a new thing, been like this for quite a few years, that’s why I won’t let my 13-year-old in there, apart from the danger as well.”

However, a spokesman for Welsh Water said the reported discharges were the result of incorrect alerts.

They said: “We are aware of reports of recent storm overflow discharges into the River Ebbw near Waunfawr.

“However, having investigated the issue, we can confirm these were incorrect spill alerts.

They added: “The monitors provide near real-time information but, as they are installed in challenging environments, including underground chambers and sewer network assets, they can generate false alerts due to factors such as debris, moisture, maintenance activity, telemetry faults or wildlife.”

The river, particularly near Waunfawr, became the focus of concern after residents warned of ongoing sewage releases.
