The man has written countless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/8\/15\/4623732\/dave-eggers-the-circle-initial-synopsis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">novels<\/a>, screenplays, pieces of journalism, started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/art-club\/660587\/mcsweeneys-quarterly-78-vietnamese-diaspora-cigar-box\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McSweeney\u2019s<\/a>, and founded multiple schools and nonprofits that support writers and the arts more broadly. So one might expect he\u2019d roll into the company\u2019s offices and offer tips on being relentlessly prolific, or how to excel in multiple fields. Instead, he apparently laced into the company. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1c833e7b-3cba-4b87-8b45-33d6c2bd468e?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Financial Times<\/a>, Eggers told the staff:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1lkuyz88 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cThe effect of ChatGPT on educators\u2019 lives is catastrophic. Whether you intended to do it or not, you\u2019ve made every teacher\u2019s life infinitely more difficult than it was two years ago. So, just let that settle in\u2026 If students are using it to compose, which is the biggest tragedy of all, they\u2019ll never learn to write. And their voice is stolen from them. They\u2019ll never have the ability to say their truth and tell their own story. And that\u2019s silencing an entire generation or two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">To be fair, Altman likely knew what he was getting himself into. Eggers\u2019 best-selling novel The Circle is a scathing critique of the tech industry.
