\n<\/p>\nA Nigerian nurse, Emmanuel Ndubuisi, has been honoured with a national bravery award after saving a patient\u2019s life when she accidentally set herself on fire while attempting to vape in her hospital bed.\n<\/p>\n
According to the foreign news outlet, The Mirror, on Friday, the incident occurred in August 2025 at Sunderland Royal Hospital in the United Kingdom when a female patient in her 50s tried to use an e-cigarette while connected to an oxygen supply.\n<\/p>\n
The combination caused a fire that ignited the patient\u2019s head, leaving her with burns and threatening to spread across the hospital ward.\n<\/p>\n
Ndubuisi acted swiftly by disconnecting the patient\u2019s oxygen supply before using a fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames, preventing what could have been a far more devastating incident.<\/p>\n
The patient sustained burns to her head and received further treatment but escaped more serious injuries due to the nurse\u2019s quick intervention.\n<\/p>\n
Photographs released after the incident showed the extent of the blaze, with the oxygen mask and tubing melted by the fire and scorch marks left on the hospital room floor.\n<\/p>\n
Recalling the incident, Ndubuisi described it as one of the most frightening moments of his career.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn the day it was a really scary moment, and you never know how you\u2019re going to initially react. It was all about teamwork.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone acted so quickly. I was covered in smoke and terrified. I had to do one thing \u2013 either run off or turn that oxygen off. I\u2019m incredibly grateful to receive this award.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a real honour and motivates me to keep doing my best for our patients and colleagues every day,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
Ndubuisi was presented with a Cavell Star Award in recognition of his courage, calmness under pressure and decisive actions that protected both the patient and hospital staff.\n<\/p>\n
Karen Sheard, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, described him as \u201cthe very best of our profession.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a powerful example of our Trust\u2019s values in action. In the NHS, we often talk about our values \u2013 compassion, respect, teamwork and honesty, but this is about seeing those values lived in practice.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cEmmanuel represents the very best of our profession, reminds us why we are proud to work in healthcare and inspires all of us to continue striving for excellence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you for all you do. We are incredibly proud to have Emmanuel part of our team,\u201d she said.\n<\/p>\n
Following the incident, the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust renewed its warning about the dangers of smoking or vaping in hospitals, particularly around oxygen equipment.\n<\/p>\n
The Trust\u2019s Fire Safety and Security Manager, Jim Charlton, said, \u201cThis shocking incident shows exactly why we ask our patients and visitors not to vape inside our buildings. We do that to keep everyone safe.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThis patient has been left injured by what happened, but it is fortunate it was not even more serious. Hospitals are a place of care, treatment and recuperation for those who need our help.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThe staff on the ward where this incident happened are to be commended on their swift response. They turned off the oxygen and put out the fire with an extinguisher. All of those involved were fantastic.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
