Trying to predict Elon Musk\u2019s vision of the future can feel like reading the last chapter before the rest of the book has been written. One day he\u2019s talking about a company becoming more valuable than the planet. The next, he\u2019s suggesting money itself may eventually lose its importance.<\/p>\n
The apparent contradiction surfaced on July 9, when the SpaceX<\/a> (SPCX)<\/a> CEO responded to a user on X<\/a> who questioned the company\u2019s multibillion-dollar AI compute partnership with Anthropic.<\/p>\n \u201cYou don\u2019t seem to understand that SpaceX will be worth more than the rest of Earth if we accomplish our goals,\u201d Musk wrote.<\/p>\n The comment quickly spread across social media, not least because it dwarfed even the loftiest corporate valuations. SpaceX\u2019s market capitalization climbed above $2 trillion<\/a> following its June 2026 initial public offering (IPO), but Musk wasn\u2019t talking about the next earnings report. He was describing a future where the company underpins much of humanity\u2019s economic infrastructure.<\/p>\n At first glance, though, the statement seemed to clash with something else Musk has said.<\/p>\n Read more: Wall Street is quietly buzzing about a company some call \u201cChatGPT that can see your real world.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Around the time of SpaceX\u2019s IPO, entrepreneur Peter Diamandis<\/a> asked Musk about the long-term implications of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. Rather than focusing on wealth, Musk argued that wealth itself could become a less meaningful concept.<\/p>\n \u201cI think money will stop being relevant at some point in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Musk explained that AI and robots could eventually create so much abundance that \u201cthe output of goods and services will exceed the supply of money,\u201d creating persistent deflation and reducing the importance of traditional currency.<\/p>\n Read more: The Sub-$1 Pre-IPO AI Stock That Could Make People \u201cSuperhuman\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Diamandis couldn\u2019t help but point out the irony. Musk had just become the world\u2019s first trillionaire<\/a> through SpaceX\u2019s IPO.<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, pretty much,\u201d Musk replied.<\/p>\n Those comments may sound incompatible, but they\u2019re rooted in the same idea.<\/p>\n Value Beyond Dollars<\/p>\n Musk has repeatedly argued that, while money may become less important, physical constraints won\u2019t disappear.<\/p>\n \u201cThere will still be constraints on power like electricity and mass,\u201d he has said.<\/p>\n That philosophy helps explain why SpaceX has expanded its ambitions beyond rockets. The company is developing Starmind<\/a>, a proposed constellation of AI-focused satellites designed to deliver massive computing capacity from orbit while harnessing abundant solar energy in space. Early prototypes are targeted for 2027.<\/p>\n Viewed through that lens, Musk\u2019s claim that SpaceX could one day be worth more than the rest of Earth isn\u2019t necessarily about its stock price.<\/p>\n It\u2019s control of infrastructure \u2014 energy, computing power, and access to space \u2014 that he believes could define the next economic era if traditional money becomes less central.<\/p>\n Skeptics Have Heard Big Predictions Before<\/p>\n Even by Musk\u2019s standards, this is an extraordinary claim.<\/p>\n SpaceX has continued investing heavily since its blockbuster IPO, while ambitious timelines across Musk\u2019s companies have often slipped. Critics also point to similar forecasts<\/a> he made about Tesla (TSLA)<\/a> in 2022, when he suggested the automaker could eventually be worth more than Apple (AAPL)<\/a> and Saudi Aramco combined.<\/p>\n Whether SpaceX ultimately reaches anything close to the future Musk envisions remains an open question.<\/p>\n What isn\u2019t in doubt is the consistency of his thinking. In Musk\u2019s view, becoming \u201cworth more than the rest of Earth\u201d and living in a world where money matters less aren\u2019t competing ideas.
