\u201cSend them back, no strings,\u201d he wrote on social media<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n In Greece, Mr. Burnham\u2019s appointment has caused some excitement. On Saturday, Ta Nea, a Greek newspaper, published a lengthy article<\/a> outlining his previous statements urging the return of the ancient sculptures. Would Mr. Burnham \u201cbecome Greece\u2019s strongest ally yet in Downing Street?\u201d the newspaper asked.<\/p>\n How much Mr. Burnham could do to return the marbles is unclear. Past British governments have repeatedly said<\/a> the issue is a matter for the British Museum, not lawmakers, while secret talks<\/a> between the museum and Greece\u2019s prime minister on a deal to return the artifacts are stalled.<\/p>\n The British Museum has offered to return a proportion of the artifacts on loan; Greece has said that it will only accept a deal when the museum\u2019s entire collection is given back permanently.<\/p>\n Mr. Burnham could also change his views.
