\"Marathon's<\/a><\/p>\n

Marathon<\/a> is a superb FPS<\/a>, but it\u2019s failed to resonate with a meaningful number of players.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s left it floundering on its most popular platform Steam, while sales have been negligible on PS5.<\/p>\n

Turmoil at dev Bungie has seen it cease supporting<\/a> Destiny 2<\/a>, lay off hundreds of staff<\/a>, and lose Marathon\u2019s Game Director<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But the studio is not giving up, and has peeled back the curtain on Marathon\u2019s experimental PVE mode, playable in co-op or solo from 21st July until 4th August.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Named \u2018Vault Breaker\u2019, this is set within the Cryo Archive level, and features roguelite progression where you get stronger with each run. The further you progress, the more rewards you\u2019ll unlock \u2013 some of which can be used in the existing PVP content.<\/p>\n

This is Bungie\u2019s first step towards making Marathon more accessible, as one of the biggest criticisms aimed at it so far is that it\u2019s simply too hardcore.<\/p>\n

Given the short, two week window, I imagine the dev\u2019s going to be paying close attention to feedback here and adjusting accordingly.<\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t expect this to revive Marathon\u2019s fortunes overnight, but it seems like a sensible first step towards transforming the game into something more people actually want to interact with.<\/p>\n
