(Ryan) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">That is unlikely to continue in the long-term said principal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/economist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/economist\">economist<\/a> Myles Patton, with the retail trend expected to eventually filter through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">However, the latest EPC economic outlook forecasts the Northern Ireland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/economy\">economy<\/a> will grow by 1.6% in gross value added (GVA) terms this year and next, rising to 1.7% by 2028. The UK economy is expected to growth by just 1% this year, rising to 1.6% by 2029.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The UUEPC anticipates the north\u2019s economy will expand at a faster rate than the wider UK over the next four years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe actual figures show how resilient the Northern Ireland economy has been despite the geopolitical tensions,\u201d said Dr Patton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">That resilience has been underpinned by the strength of the labour market.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Ulster University principal economy, Myles Patton.\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/H3FBATGAIVG6DMMKFV4CNLK54E.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Ulster University principal economy, Myles Patton. (Nigel McDowell) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cPartly that\u2019s reflected by the importance of the public sector, with expansions in jobs in education and health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBut the private sector is continuing to do well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ulster University\u2019s research shows 107,000 jobs were added across the north between 2015 and 2025, with health and education responsible for around one-third of that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Around 11,000 jobs were added across manufacturing in that ten year period, with the \u2018professional &amp; scientific\u2019 sector responsible for around 15,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The university\u2019s EPC expect a baseline of 63,000 jobs to be created in the ten years to 2035.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">However, that could rise to 89,000 depending on economic performance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">As many as 12,000 construction jobs could be added if major infrastructure schemes go ahead as planned, the economists say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Healthcare will continue to be a major driver of job growth, but new research from the university has flagged up the cost of high rates of staff turnover in the health and social care system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It estimates the financial burden of losing dozens of social workers in particular cost around \u00a37m in 2024\/25 due to the costs associated with hiring, training and productivity losses while vacancies remained unfilled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The search found that cutting the number of social workers leaving by 20% could have saved \u00a31.43m, which could in turn fund 42 band 5\/6 social workers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Senior economist Gillian Martin.\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/VAUJVMFVFFD5HFCDT5CHCOVGXU.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Senior economist Gillian Martin.
