People started asking about my work, placing orders and inviting me for television interviews. That was when I realised people were ready to support something different.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U36715562077FUX\" style=\"\">As his confidence grew, so did his ambition.<\/p>\n<p>One mat requires 500 and 800 discarded chip packets<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U35655526156OMt\" style=\"\">In 2015, Simelane decided to take his recycling concept even further by incorporating plastic into fashion.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U17636373082dJm\" style=\"\">\u201cI wanted to be different from every other fashion brand. There are many clothing brands, but I wanted people to see something they had never seen before.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U11666308385HXY\" style=\"\">\u201cSo I mixed fashion with plastic. As a child, Simelane spent countless hours swimming and fishing in the Umlazi River. Today, he says, the river has changed dramatically.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U13064841051pQm\" style=\"\">\u201cWhen I was growing up, we used to swim there, and people caught fish to feed their families and sell at local markets.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U40632261763VXw\" style=\"\">\u201cNow the river is filled with waste. Supporters from different provinces collect used chip packets and courier them to Durban, helping supply the raw materials needed for production.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U67122351310iqT\" style=\"\">Schools, taxi ranks and local communities also contribute recyclable plastic that is cleaned before being transformed into new products.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U00338565063YTF\" style=\"\">Looking ahead, Simelane hopes to see his creations stocked in major retail stores, expand into international markets and establish training programmes that teach young people how to build sustainable businesses from waste.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U78433077007rpZ\" style=\"\">\u201cI want to show young people that waste can create opportunities.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U37800385747LHb\" style=\"\">\u201cIf more people buy products made from recycled plastic, we reduce pollution while creating jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U30438260640qTw\" style=\"\">He notes that plastic pollution is not only a South African problem but a global one.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U73580328420uGA\" style=\"\">\u201cIf we can expand into other provinces and eventually other countries, we can reduce plastic pollution on a much bigger scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018One might see rubbish, another sees treasure\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U18484816304YLO\" style=\"\">His message to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: value can be found where others see nothing.<\/p>\n<p data-eom-bogus=\"1\" id=\"U71617451616Atp\" style=\"\">He said:<\/p>\n<p>There is a saying that the builders rejected the stone that later became the cornerstone.
