{"id":704738,"date":"2026-07-22T06:14:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T06:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/704738\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T06:14:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T06:14:10","slug":"adventure-cyclist-from-norwich-breaks-back-in-beauty-picture-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/704738\/","title":{"rendered":"Adventure cyclist from Norwich breaks back in beauty picture fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A round-the-world cyclist broke her back in a freak accident as she tried to take a picture while on her friend&#8217;s shoulders.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Matilda Pine, from Norwich, set off on a two-year expedition on 4 April, and was in Turkey when she fell, fracturing her back in two places. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 30-year-old, who was also hoping to raise some money for the charity Cycle for Good, said: &#8220;I was having the time of my life doing this trip. 100% I will return.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She is now waiting to be flown back to the UK to continue with her recovery following her accident on 10 July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Pine told BBC Radio Norfolk&#8217;s Chris Goreham she had been preparing for her trip for seven years, gearing up both physically and mentally. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She documented her travels on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/theplacesandthefacesinbetween\/\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">social media, external<\/a>, speaking about chance encounters, acts of kindness from strangers and posting images of incredible landscapes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, her adventure came to an abrupt halt after her fall. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;As I was climbing onto my friend&#8217;s shoulders and he went to stand up, I just flipped off backwards and landed on my back,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The accident happened in a remote field and she was left lying on the ground for two hours before her friend then helped her walk to a road  where they picked up a taxi to a treatment centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An X-ray confirmed she had fractured her back, damaging her vertebrae, but no spinal cord damage was evident. <\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A round-the-world cyclist broke her back in a freak accident as she tried to take a picture while&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":704739,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[37],"tags":[4985,101,56,54,55],"class_list":["post-704738","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-cycling","tag-cycling","tag-sports","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/704738","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=704738"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/704738\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/704739"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=704738"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=704738"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=704738"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
