Carrier incentives and trade-in bonuses help, but prices are headed in the wrong direction, and it doesn’t appear we will see relief anytime soon. That’s why it’s important to take every opportunity you can to save money.

Thankfully, there are a ton of older flagships still worth picking up — with the Pixel 8 Pro at the top of my list. Its blend of current performance, extended software support, and excellent price makes it an ideal choice for people who don’t want to feel compromised just because they don’t want to spend over $1,000 on a device.

If you’re in the market for a new phone and the current flagship prices are horrifying you, this is why a Pixel 8 Pro should wind up in your pocket.

Would you ever buy a pre-owned flagship phone?

49 votes

Yes! Fantastic way to save money.

76%

No, I need my devices new all the time.

24%

Premium materials don’t know what year it is

Stephen Radochia / Android Authority

You don’t feel like you’re holding an almost three-year-old flagship when you pick up a Pixel 8 Pro. Its Gorilla Glass Victus 2-covered display and polished aluminum frame are holding up well in 2026. Some mid-range phones have started using more premium materials, but for the ~$330 you’ll spend on a Pixel 8 Pro, it’ll be hard to find a better-built device. An IP68 rating for dust and water resistance should offer further peace of mind.

I even prefer the Pixel 8 Pro’s design to that of its successors. I understand why Google did what it did with its smartphones, making them attractive on carrier store shelves next to iPhones. However, there’s something about the mostly flat front glass paired with the curved back glass that just melts into my hand. It’s a comfortable phone to hold without a case, and I wish Google could get back to that.

It gets harder for me to recommend a Google phone older than the Pixel 8 Pro because of the displays. Google’s Super Actua panels make all the difference, and the 6.7-inch screen on the Pixel 8 Pro holds up well in 2026. It’s vibrant and saturated, and it was the first Pixel I didn’t need to crank up the brightness on indoors. Mid-range phones are often limited to 1080p panels. They aren’t bad, but for roughly the same money, the Pixel 8 Pro offers a wonderful QHD experience.

The Tensor G3 isn’t as bad as you remember

Stephen Radochia / Android Authority

I often highlight the Tensor G3 as the turning point for Google’s chipsets. It’s not perfect, and some users still had difficulties, but it’s hard to argue with the value for about $330.

I still find it to be a capable chipset, especially paired with 12GB of RAM. Daily tasks are a breeze, as I can use WhatsApp, Instagram, Google Chrome, and more without difficulty. If you’re a hardcore gamer, a Pixel 8 Pro probably wouldn’t be my first choice, but for most people looking to spend under $400, it provides comparable (or better) performance to what you’ll find with other phones out there.

The software support is where the Pixel 8 Pro becomes the wise choice for budget-minded buyers. It still has over four years of Android upgrades and security patches remaining, which is much more than even new mid-range phones from Motorola. It’s not just the number of updates but their quality as well. Android 17 is a fantastic experience on my Pixel 8 Pro. App bubbles work well and have completely transformed multitasking on the phone.

I doubt we will ever see a full slate of new Gemini Intelligence features on the Pixel 8 Pro, but that’s not all bad. Gemini Live, Magic Editor, and Call Screening are all available, so I feel I get enough AI functionality without spending a fortune.

The camera experience is hard to beat for the price

Stephen Radochia / Android Authority

Another area where the Pixel 8 Pro easily bests other mid-range phones is with its cameras. Its triple camera setup is fantastic, producing consistently detailed images. I love the phone’s 5x telephoto lens, and I remember it being the first phone where I went out of my way to zoom in on photos.

Despite the Pixel 8 Pro’s age, Google’s computational photography is there, filling in detail where needed. You’ll really notice the difference between the Pixel 8 Pro and a phone like the Moto G Stylus (2026) when taking low-light images. Night Sight does a significantly better job capturing details and colors at night — you won’t get too many soft images from the Pixel 8 Pro. If you enjoy taking Instagram-ready photos of your meals, the Pixel 8 Pro will be your best bet.

Pricing is what makes everything work

Stephen Radochia / Android Authority

I respect people who would prefer to pick up a Galaxy S24 Ultra over a Pixel 8 Pro at this point. The S24 Ultra is still an excellent phone and one of my favorites. However, a decent one will run you over $200 more than the Pixel. For $550, so many other capable phones come into play, making it a more complicated conversation.

At a little over $330 through Amazon Renewed, the Pixel 8 Pro provides the right balance for most buyers, without you having to feel like you’re compromising too much. It was a solid flagship back in 2024, and not much has changed in 2026.

Thank you for being part of our community.
