Kaymer was present at a captain\u2019s meeting at LIV Golf UK on Tuesday afternoon ahead of the league\u2019s return after a seven-week hiatus. That lengthy break was enforced after LIV postponed a regular season event in New Orleans in late June amid reported concerns about soaring temperatures and course conditions, and now the league could be plunged into further chaos.<\/p>\n
In the meeting, LIV chief Scott O\u2019Neil assured players that there were investors interested in saving the embattled league. O\u2019Neil is fundraising for $350 million in a bid to plough on after the Saudi Public Investment Fund announced they were withdrawing their multi-billion backing at the end of the season, and has had positive feedback since taking LIV to market.<\/p>\n
But the clock is ticking and TG understands the league has a September deadline to secure the funding it needs to preserve its future beyond 2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were hoping for a bit more information,\u201d Kaymer, the former world No.1, told TG at JCB Golf & Country Club on Wednesday. \u201cI mean, we got the information,\u00a0but we were more looking for decisions\u00a0or what was happening next year.\u00a0And unfortunately, even Scott,\u00a0he can\u2019t tell us because he doesn\u2019t know.\u00a0It depends so much on the investors. Hopefully, I think there\u2019s a lot of interest\u00a0and it\u2019s looking good.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut we\u2019ve all been there.\u00a0If the signature is not there, then it doesn\u2019t mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, speculation builds over the final events on the LIV schedule. There had been reports that LIV\u2019s last regular season at Chatham Hills in Indianapolis could be pulled, but the league\u2019s lucrative team showpiece in Michigan now appears under most threat.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know that Indianapolis most likely is happening,\u201d Kaymer added.\u00a0\u201cThere was a conversation yesterday. Michigan, highly unlikely.\u00a0So basically, what we already knew. That\u2019s why I think it became a captains\u2019 meeting\u00a0and not a players\u2019 meeting,\u00a0because they couldn\u2019t give us much more than we had before.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kaymer believes there is a \u201cfive percent\u201d chance the tournament will take place as scheduled because infrastructure is yet to be built on the course.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course, we are disappointed,\u201d says Kaymer. \u201cI heard yesterday, actually, on the Golf Channel\u00a0that there were talks that Indianapolis\u00a0could become a team event instead of Michigan.\u00a0That we don\u2019t know. I think that would be a shame\u00a0that we get reduced even more individual tournaments.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn the other hand, how do you want to have a team winning the whole season\u00a0if you don\u2019t have a team event?\u00a0We need to be honest. The whole season was a bit of a\u2026 there was so much happening.\u00a0Yeah.\u00a0Cancelled New Orleans. Cancelled most likely the last event.\u00a0So I think it\u2019s important to just finish the season\u00a0and hopefully we\u2019ll have a plan for 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n
A decision is expected to be made next Tuesday on whether the plug will indeed be pulled on the Michigan event, but Kaymer admits that \u201caccording to yesterday, it didn\u2019t look good\u201d.<\/p>\n
The two-time major champion added: \u201cIt\u2019s just a shame\u00a0for the whole LIV Golf schedule\u00a0if it doesn\u2019t happen\u00a0and for the whole team thing\u00a0because we would love to play\u00a0match play against each other. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat would have been really cool.\u00a0But if it doesn\u2019t happen,\u00a0it is what it is\u00a0and we just need to focus on\u00a0hopefully 2027\u00a0and, you know,\u00a0hit the reset button\u00a0and try to be more independent next year.\u201d<\/p>\n
LIV is continuing to plan ahead in the meantime in discussions with potential investors, pitching a streamlined model with fewer events and reduced prize pots. The league suffered another blow this week, though, when it was announced that it had lost its key partner, the Asian Tour. <\/p>\n
LIV secured an agreement with the second-tier circuit in 2021, prior to its launch, and the Asian Tour has since offered the league pathways for promotion and relegation. But the Asian Tour has now signed a global alliance with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, leaving LIV to plough its own furrow in its bid for survival.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are working their arses off\u00a0to get a deal,\u201d Kaymer stressed. \u201cBut in the end, if those investors decide to pull out,\u00a0then we don\u2019t play golf next year on LIV Golf.\u00a0And if they decide to do it,\u00a0then we have a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kaymer expects to find out LIV\u2019s fate at LIV\u2019s penultimate regular season event at Trump Bedminster in two weeks\u2019 time.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a bit sad because\u00a0we all invested in this year\u00a0and I\u2019m not meaning financially,\u201d he said when asked about the uncertainty.\u00a0\u201cWe invested time, emotions, hopes,\u00a0the vision,\u00a0and if it would fail that way,\u00a0the way it failed now,\u00a0because we\u2019ve been told in February\u00a0we are fully funded until 2031\u00a0and two months later,\u00a0it all goes down. It would be a shame.\u201d<\/p>\n
LIV Golf declined to comment on the Michigan event when reached by TG.
