Pride of place in the Ibrox trophy room sits a gift handed over by St Etienne half a century ago.<\/p>\n
And it didn\u2019t take Lawrence Shankland long to get on his bike either.<\/p>\n
The former Hearts skipper took just four minutes to open his Ibrox account as a Rangers player.<\/p>\n
But Derek McInnes will have to hope Gers’ recruitment team get peddling and find the attacking talents he\u2019s going to need to escape the Premiership peloton this season.<\/p>\n
St Etienne were a giant of European football when they arrived for a European Cup tie back in 1975 and handed over the now famous trophy room racer.<\/p>\n
These days, they\u2019re stuck in the French second tier.<\/p>\n
Gers too aren\u2019t the powerhouse they once were and have called in McInnes after last year\u2019s Tour de Farce saw them trudge home third.<\/p>\n
Following four closed-door warm-ups, this was their first public workout in front of 24,000 supporters.<\/p>\n
They all got what they came to see when Shankland converted an early penalty after Mohamed Diomande was tripped in the box.<\/p>\n
But despite having signed six new faces, there\u2019s still a shortage of attacking flair in McInnes\u2019 line-up.<\/p>\n
It was the French side who showed far more intent in the first half, with former Celtic target Jakob Breum tapping home the equaliser after Tuur Rommens and Findlay Curtis failed to clear the danger.<\/p>\n
But Gers did grab the victory late on when Thelo Aasgaard dispatched their second spot-kick of the night after Bojan Mivoski was brought down by St Etienne keeper Gautier Laesonneur.<\/p>\n
