Tom Morello<\/a>\u00a0has launched a memorial project in\u00a0honour\u00a0of his late mother Mary, who died earlier this month at the age of 102.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Rage Against The Machine<\/a>\u00a0guitarist announced the Mary Morello Memorial Project on Monday (July 20), eight days after\u00a0confirming her death by writing that she would be \u201cforever with the Rebels of Light & Song\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Explaining the impetus behind the new project, Morello has said: \u201cThe Morello Family invites friends, family, and all those whose lives were touched by Mary Morello to honor her memory by helping to keep her legacy of compassion, courage and service alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDonations to the Mary Morello Memorial Project will support organizations that were deeply meaningful to Mary throughout her\u00a0life, and\u00a0reflect the causes she passionately believed in and was proud to work alongside.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0project\u00a0will raise funds in support of the UFW Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, The Midnight Mission, Jail Guitar Doors, Orphans\u00a0Of\u00a0The\u00a0Storm, All Chicago, Coraz\u00f3n for Cuba, the Palestine Children\u2019s Relief Fund and the Center\u00a0For\u00a0Native American Youth, with more\u00a0organisations\u00a0potentially set to be added in the future. Donations can be made\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As well as asking for financial support, the Morello family encouraged people to take direct action before October 1, which would have been Mary\u2019s 103rd birthday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also invite you to \u2018do as Mary did\u2019,\u00a0and engage\u00a0first hand\u00a0in CARING, SERVICE & ACTION,\u201d Morello continued. \u201cBetween now and Oct. 1st [\u2026] get out there and DO SOMETHING: volunteer, protest, speak up, speak out, walk a picket line, do political art & music, and help those in need in your community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Participants have been invited to share their efforts on Instagram and tag @MaryMorelloMemorialProject, \u201cso as a community we can continue Mary\u2019s work for peace, equality and justice\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mary was a teacher and lifelong activist whose work spanned more than seven decades. She fiercely opposed Jim Crow laws, aided anti-colonial movements in Africa, supported several trade unions, and spoke out against apartheid, helping to instil the political consciousness that later became central to her son\u2019s music and activism.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The news\u00a0of her passing\u00a0followed\u00a0Morello\u00a0cancelling a series of UK and European appearances <\/a>so that he could\u00a0return home and help care for her.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, the guitarist recently teamed up with\u00a0System Of A Down<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Serj Tankian<\/a>\u00a0and his son Roman Morello for the single\u00a0\u2018Adjourn It\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He is also due to host the one-day\u00a0Power To The People festival<\/a>\u00a0at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland on October 3.\u00a0Bruce Springsteen<\/a>,\u00a0Foo Fighters<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Joan Baez <\/a>are among the artists set to appear.<\/p>\n
