{"id":707430,"date":"2026-07-23T17:24:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T17:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/707430\/"},"modified":"2026-07-23T17:24:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T17:24:10","slug":"british-gas-owner-confirms-1300-jobs-are-being-cut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/707430\/","title":{"rendered":"British Gas owner confirms 1,300 jobs are being cut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>British Gas owner Centrica has confirmed around 1,300 jobs are being cut as it reported lower half-year earnings.<\/p>\n<p>The reduction represents around 14 per cent of the customer operations workforce.<\/p>\n<p>It includes the 500 call centre roles across Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Leicester, Stockport and Leeds that Centrica announced last month as part of its &#8220;Customer Service Transformation&#8221; programme.<\/p>\n<p>The GMB union has claimed those 500 roles are effectively being replaced by artificial intelligence, an allegation the company has rejected.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"786b7\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"4899ff9be273262d7373b5cede60d55f\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201024%20768'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/u200bbritish-gas.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" alt=\"\\u200bBritish Gas\"\/>British Gas owner Centrica confirms 1,300 job cuts as earnings fall | GETTY<\/p>\n<p>A further 800 roles are being cut from support functions.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for Centrica said: \u201cWe have been transforming the business for a number of years to ensure we have the right roles in the right places for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means making changes to improve efficiency, drive commercial performance and give our customers the service they want.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, we continue to invest in the skills where there is demand, including recruiting more engineers to meet growing demand and hiring 500 apprentices this year alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company said average customer contact per account has fallen 20 per cent year on year, with around nine in 10 customer interactions now taking place through digital self-service channels including its website, app, chatbot and WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p>A Centrica spokesman said last month: &#8220;The suggestion these roles are being replaced by AI or new chatbot technology is simply wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The company said the changes instead reflect shifting customer behaviour, with inbound contact volumes falling by around 31 per cent since 2023.<\/p>\n<p>It added that customers who still need to speak to an adviser, particularly vulnerable people, would continue to receive support.<\/p>\n<p>Charlotte Brumpton-Childs, GMB national secretary, said: &#8220;It&#8217;s an absolute disgrace British Gas is slashing hundreds of human jobs and giving them to chatbots. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These staff are massively overworked and underpaid, yet do their level best to keep customers happy.
