{"id":711002,"date":"2026-07-25T20:15:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T20:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/711002\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T20:15:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T20:15:11","slug":"antonelli-penalised-for-failing-to-slow-enough-after-verstappen-spin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/711002\/","title":{"rendered":"Antonelli penalised for failing to slow enough after Verstappen spin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Championship leader Kimi Antonelli has been given a three-place grid penalty for slowing \u201cless than 1%\u201d for yellow flags in Q3 for Formula 1&#8217;s Hungarian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>Max Verstappen spun his Red Bull at the final corner in Q3 and, while Antonelli lifted off the throttle, the stewards found that he did not slow enough.<\/p>\n<p>Antonelli did however escape a five-place grid penalty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The stewards said a drop of five grid positions was the \u201crecommended\u201d penalty but they \u201cconsidered that the driver did make a reduction in speed, albeit, in our determination, an insufficient and unsustained one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther, the driver had limited time and distance to react. Hence a lower penalty is applied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Antonelli qualified fourth at the Hungaroring and would have been promoted to third due to Ferrari\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-race.com\/formula-1\/lewis-hamilton-oscar-piastri-hungarian-gp-qualifying-incident\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lewis Hamilton receiving a penalty<\/a> for impeding McLaren\u2019s Oscar Piastri.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Mercedes driver will instead be demoted to seventh on the grid.<\/p>\n<p>After qualifying, Antonelli told media including The Race that he had to \u201ccoast all the way into the apex\u201d on a lap that he called \u201cterrible\u201d before he reached the last corner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Less than 1%\u2019 slower<\/p>\n<p>According to the stewards\u2019 document, Antonelli reasoned that he \u201clifted off the throttle earlier than his previous push lap.
