{"id":712504,"date":"2026-07-26T20:20:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T20:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/712504\/"},"modified":"2026-07-26T20:20:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-26T20:20:09","slug":"burnhams-move-into-number-10-sees-mortgage-rates-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/712504\/","title":{"rendered":"Burnham\u2019s move into Number 10 sees mortgage rates rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-202730 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Andy-Burham-1.jpg\" alt=\"Andy Burnham\" width=\"730\" height=\"455\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>As Andy Burham officially become Britain\u2019s new Prime Minister, there was bad news for borrowers.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the big lenders announced they would be <a href=\"https:\/\/thenegotiator.co.uk\/news\/uk-housing-market-news\/have-eye-watering-borrowing-costs-finally-peaked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">increasing mortgage rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Halifax, HSBC and Barclays all announced increased interest rates from this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Mortgage rates<\/p>\n<p>It follows Trump\u2019s launching a new wave of strikes in Iran, while at home, the King appointed a new Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>Hina Bhudia, Partner at Knight Frank Finance, says: \u201cHalifax, HSBC and Barclays all notified brokers of rate increases taking effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp until the end of last week, the market had been relatively calm, with borrowers benefiting from a range of competitively priced tracker and fixed rate products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, a sharp rise in swap rates, driven by heightened geopolitical tensions and the escalating conflict in Iran, has prompted lenders to reprice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some cases, the increases are significant, highlighting how quickly uncertainty in global markets can feed through to mortgage pricing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sharp rise in swap rates, driven by heightened geopolitical tensions and the escalating conflict in Iran, has prompted lenders to reprice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The changes include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.co.uk\/mortgages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Halifax increasing<\/a> its rates by as much as 0.2%, affecting two, three and five-year fixed rates mortgages for homemovers and first-time buyers.<\/p>\n<p>It means the removal of Halifax\u2019s sub-4% mortgage rates.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Harris, chief executive of mortgage broker SPF Private Clients, says: \u201cSwap rate volatility during the past week has led to a number of lenders repricing upwards, with others expected to follow suit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRe-escalation of the conflict in the Middle East has led to the jump in Swaps, rather than domestic political uncertainty, but there could be a bumpy ride ahead, which is the last thing the new Prime Minister needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<br clear=\"all\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"As Andy Burham officially become Britain\u2019s new Prime Minister, there was bad news for borrowers.
