(ABC News: Declan Bowring)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Making the wildlife corridor involved identifying native flora, removing invasive species and keeping native species on the site intact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Bennett wants to see it kept as a wildlife corridor in perpetuity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s our biodiversity. That&#8217;s our web of life,&#8221; Ms Bennett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The pair and several other neighbours entered into a formal agreement through the Community Environment Network&#8217;s Land for Wildlife program, which assists landowners with conservation.<\/p>\n<p>Historical development applications push Sydney&#8217;s boundaries<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Kurrajong residents like Ms Hulbert and Ms Bennett are concerned about the impact of developments that push into the forested edges of Sydney&#8217;s fringe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Just a five-minute drive from the corridor in Kurrajong Heights is a 40-hectare development that recently cleared habitat trees for eight residential blocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The development application, approved in 2010, features a koala habitat assessment that claimed there was no evidence or sightings of koalas in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, Stephanie Clay, who has lived near the development for seven years, says the area has always been known as koala habitat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a view of the Sydney Cumberland plain as seen from mountains\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/dcf041b13583da3a776fe77547518147.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Lesley Hulbert and Polly Bennett are concerned about developments at Sydney&#8217;s urban fringe.\u00a0 (ABC News: Declan Bowring)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Even in 2008 they would&#8217;ve only had to have asked a few neighbours, and they would&#8217;ve been told there are koalas here,&#8221; (Supplied: Sydney Basin Koala Network)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The area here is largely privately owned, so landholders coming together to protect it is an incredible gift to koalas and other wildlife like endangered gang-gang cockatoos who nest in the hollows,&#8221; Ms Carrick said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The biggest threat to koalas overall in the Hawkesbury is bushfire, with 78.7 per cent of koala habitat lost in the Black Summer bushfires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In this context, wildlife corridors across private land create lifelines for koalas and other wildlife as private property is prioritised by the NSW Rural Fire Service.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Lesley Hulbert remembers when the bird-filled forest behind her home bordering a Sydney national park went quiet.
