Of course, there are those of us who still love the fact that we can hold a physical record in our hands and cherish it forever, but these days those people tend to be people who have slightly more niche interests in record collecting rather than the general populace who would prefer to consume music in the most convenient way.

For a period, this alteration of the rules meant that many records were being broken, rewriting the history books in a multitude of ways that had very specific permutations for the direction that the charts would take. Not long after downloads were introduced into official figures, physical sales of hit singles began to dip as low as under 20,000 in a week in some cases, and while in the years since there have been number one hits that haven’t sold a single physical or digital copy in their ascent to the top, it became obvious much earlier that a shift was taking place.

Because physical sales can theoretically have a cap on how many can be produced at a time, and therefore a lifespan based on demand, there’s actually a higher chance of the same song remaining number one for longer in the modern era than there ever was before.

For example, in 2016, only ten unique songs made it to number one in the UK, with Drake’s ‘One Dance’ accounting for 15 weeks’ worth of chart-topping success. While there can’t be any fewer number ones registered in 2026, what we are experiencing is another instance of a song being so dominant that it’s on course to shatter all sorts of records.

Credit: India FlemingWhat is the indie song that is dominating the UK charts?

While not ‘indie’ in the traditional sense of being released via an independent label, Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s collaborative hit, ‘Rein Me In’ has proven itself to be a major crossover hit, spending 17 non-consecutive weeks and counting at the top, as of the time of writing.

Having taken the nation by storm since February 2026, the most remarkable part of this is that the song actually came out in 2025, and it also isn’t even the original version of the song. Fender originally released ‘Rein Me In’ as a single from his third studio album, People Watching, before re-recording it with Dean later the same year as a duet, and thanks to the power of social media, where it has found an unprecedented second wind through Instagram and TikTok, it now stands to break multiple records in the coming weeks.

The song spent 35 weeks in the chart before it reached its peak, now having completely annihilated Ed Sheeran’s previous record for the most consecutive weeks in the UK top 40 before making it to number one, when ‘Thinking Out Loud’ took 19 weeks to climb to the top in 2014.

The all-time record for most weeks at the top of the UK chart has stood since 1953, when Frankie Laine spent 18 non-consecutive weeks at the top of the chart with ‘I Believe’… To see this equalled and surpassed after 73 would not only be a remarkable feat, but would demonstrate how, despite the consumption of music may have changed, people in the UK will still go barmy for a song when it manages to connect with a wide-spanning audience.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE The Far Out New Music Newsletter

All the latest New Music from the independent voice of culture.
Straight to your inbox.

[28
6492,47816,2307,4622,96,596,236154,128,24275,1581,37964,56,54,55
post-713117","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-2020s","tag-47816","tag-britain","tag-charts","tag-entertainment","tag-homepage","tag-indie-pop","tag-music","tag-olivia-dean","tag-pop","tag-sam-fender","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
