The film-maker Chuck Russell, who has died aged 74, described himself as \u201ca thrill junkie with a sense of humour\u201d. The proof was in the pudding: his madcap comedy The Mask<\/a> (1994) resembled a cinematic knickerbocker glory overflowing with colour, vitality and fun. Its star Jim Carrey called it \u201cone of the jewels of my creative life\u201d.<\/p>\n

Before Russell was attached to the project, The Mask had been doing the rounds in Hollywood for several years as a horror script. Once he came on board, he persuaded the studio New Line Cinema to let him reshape it as an exuberant comic spectacular. \u201cI wanted to take the various things I know about special effects and apply it to dance and comedy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s Jekyll-and-Hyde-style story is simplicity itself: when he dons an ancient wooden mask, a timid bank clerk (Carrey) is transformed into an anarchic, lime-faced jester in a banana-yellow zoot suit. Russell created a riotous live-action cartoon that fused Carrey\u2019s gift for physical mayhem with cutting-edge CGI. \u201cI found myself leaning towards Tex Avery<\/a> physics,\u201d Russell said; he showed a thumping heart protruding from the actor\u2019s chest, eyeballs flying from their sockets and an elongated tongue unspooling like a red carpet.<\/p>\n

Between them, he and Carrey developed what the director called a \u201cwindup-and-pitch\u201d style of shorthand on set. \u201cI would tell Jim I needed a bigger windup, and he knew he had to cock his head back to give me a greater forward thrust because I was going to extend his entire face five feet by the time I was done with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell called Carrey \u201can uncanny talent \u2026 The problem was night shooting, when Jim would crash after \u2018lunch\u2019 at 2am. We played a little game to keep him going during the long wait for lighting on those nights. I\u2019d toss out a double impression challenge; not just a celebrity impression, but [something like] \u2018Elvis doing Clint Eastwood\u2019\u2026 This kept us alert and laughing in the wee hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Raking in more than $351m, The Mask became the fourth highest-grossing release of its year. \u201cI designed the film to play internationally,\u201d Russell said. \u201cThere is something universal in the \u2026 fear of letting loose. The release of all these fears and dreams could be a good thing, it could be a bad thing. You just don\u2019t know. However, it is a dangerous thing. That is a wonderful, universal idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

It did not hurt that he insisted on pairing Carrey with the charismatic newcomer Cameron Diaz. \u201cIt became quite a campaign for me to get the studio to accept using a totally inexperienced actress in a lead role.\u201d He described the chemistry between the leads as \u201cthe real \u2018special effect\u2019\u201d in The Mask.<\/p>\n

Launching new acting talent was a speciality of his. He made his directing debut with the horror sequel A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors<\/a> (1987), which also marked Patricia Arquette\u2019s movie debut. On the Arnold Schwarzenegger action vehicle Eraser<\/a> (1996), he gave second billing to Vanessa Williams, who had acted sporadically but was better known as a singer. The Scorpion King<\/a> (2002), a spin-off of The Mummy, provided the wrestler Dwayne Johnson, AKA the Rock, with his first lead role.<\/p>\n

Born in Park Ridge, Illinois, Chuck (Charles) was the son of Patricia, a travel agent, and Charles Sr, an advertising executive. He was educated at Maine South high school and the University of Illinois. After directing some one-act plays he left Chicago for Los Angeles to try to make it in the movie industry.<\/p>\n

Like many aspiring film-makers of his era, he served his apprenticeship under the enterprising, low-budget producer Roger Corman<\/a>, starting out as second assistant director on the violent, futuristic action movie Death Race 2000<\/a> (1975).<\/p>\n

Going on to work in multiple areas of film production, he was an executive producer on the slasher horror Hell Night<\/a> (1981), where he met Frank Darabont, future director of The Shawshank Redemption, who became his sometime writing partner.<\/p>\n

Russell co-wrote the ingenious thriller Dreamscape<\/a> (1984), a clear precursor to Christopher Nolan\u2019s Inception, starring Dennis Quaid as a psychic who can enter people\u2019s dreams. He also produced Back to School<\/a> (1986), starring the gurning US comic Rodney Dangerfield as a father enrolling in college classes alongside his own son; Kurt Vonnegut appears briefly, hired by Dangerfield to write an essay on his own novels.<\/p>\n

Itching to direct, Russell successfully lobbied New Line Cinema for the job of making the third Nightmare on Elm Street movie. He and Darabont also received co-writing credits alongside Wes Craven<\/a> (the series\u2019 creator) and Bruce Wagner.<\/p>\n

Their clinching idea was to delve more deeply this time into the dream worlds where potential victims are stalked by the scar-faced, blade-fingered, fedora-wearing killer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). This resulted in some disquieting images, including one victim being manipulated like a marionette, his exposed tendons used by Freddy as puppet strings. There was some oxygenating silliness, too: Russell persuaded Zsa Zsa Gabor<\/a> and the talkshow host Dick Cavett to play themselves in a dream sequence.<\/p>\n

In showing the demise of a heroin addict, the film incorporated a pointed anti-drugs message. The scene in question was among the most disturbing in the series: the holes in the unfortunate addict\u2019s arm start puckering like tiny, ravenous mouths before Freddy, his blades now transformed into syringes, administers the fatal fix.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019ve helped at least one person turn their back on the junkie lifestyle, I would \u2026 feel I\u2019ve done some good with the picture,\u201d Russell told Starburst magazine.<\/p>\n

In 1988, he directed his and Darabont\u2019s adaptation of the 1958 monster movie The Blob. While preparing the new version\u2019s gooey special effects, which showed victims being dissolved gruesomely by the gelatinous menace, Russell studied footage of jellyfish, paramecia and Portuguese man-o\u2019-wars ingesting food.<\/p>\n

He returned to the horror genre in Bless the Child<\/a> (2000), a chiller with Biblical overtones, starring Kim Basinger, and Witchboard<\/a> (2024).<\/p>\n

In between, he and Darabont were executive producers on Michael Mann\u2019s thriller Collateral<\/a> (2004), starring Tom Cruise as an assassin; Russell had originally hoped to direct the film. Many of the years immediately after The Scorpion King he dedicated to two \u201cepic\u201d personal projects that he planned to make within the studio system; neither came to fruition.<\/p>\n

He directed John Travolta in two little-seen thrillers, I Am Wrath<\/a> (2016) and Paradise City<\/a> (2022), the latter co-starring Bruce Willis, and made the Hindi-language martial arts adventure Junglee<\/a> (2019), in which a veterinarian battles poachers on an elephant reserve. In recent years, Russell devoted time to his company Neumorphic<\/a>, through which he hoped to make films built with generative AI.<\/p>\n

Fangoria magazine described him as \u201ca genial if somewhat guarded man with a playful side\u201d. He certainly knew how to connect with audiences. \u201cI don\u2019t live in an ivory tower,\u201d he said in 2000. \u201cI do \u2018pop\u2019 movies \u2013 but I tend to do movies that I\u2019m excited about.\u201d<\/p>\n

He is survived by his wife, Ania Zeyne, whom he married in 2007, and by three children \u2013 Carlyn, Riley and Logan \u2013 from his first marriage, to Patti Rao, which ended in divorce in 2005.<\/p>\n
