Guernsey boxer Niall Adams overcame a point deduction to win his last-16 bout at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n
The 28-year-old lightweight won a split decision over Sri Lanka’s Ravindu Jayanath after winning on a judges vote 4-1 following a majority draw. <\/p>\n
Adams won the first round with all five judges as his good work rate impressed.<\/p>\n
But he was docked a point in the second following a clash of heads as the smaller Adams tried to get inside his taller opponent.<\/p>\n
Jayanath – who reached the last 16 in last year’s IBA World Cup – had the better of the final round, but it was not enough to overturn the result.<\/p>\n
Adams will guarantee himself a medal should he win his quarter-final bout against Namibia’s Tryagain Morning Ndevelo on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
“I’m feeling great. I’m just buzzing to get back in there again,” Adams told BBC Guernsey.<\/p>\n
“I’ve boxed better than I boxed then. It was quite a hard match because he was a tall, lanky fighter, he waits for the counters and I like to come in.<\/p>\n
“So I really had to just concentrate on countering him, I ended up winning on the counters, so I feel good about that.<\/p>\n
