{"id":71477,"date":"2025-08-16T15:39:19","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T15:39:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/71477\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T15:39:19","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T15:39:19","slug":"a-signal-of-future-alzheimers-could-hide-in-the-way-you-speak-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/71477\/","title":{"rendered":"A Signal of Future Alzheimer&#8217;s Could Hide in The Way You Speak : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re still not sure exactly what causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alzheimer-s-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/a>, but we know what its effects look like, and we&#8217;re getting better at detecting the early signs of it \u2013 including, perhaps, those in our speech.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists from Boston University have developed a new AI ( <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/artificial-intelligence\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73092\" data-postid=\"170777\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">artificial intelligence<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtarget.com\/searchenterpriseai\/tip\/Types-of-AI-algorithms-and-how-they-work\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">algorithm<\/a> that analyzes the speech patterns of those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).<\/p>\n<p>It can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F6O1cNKoCPw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">predict a progression<\/a> from MCI to  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73015\" data-postid=\"170777\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> within six years with an accuracy of 78.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/5-early-speech-related-signs-youre-at-risk-of-alzheimers-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">5 Early, Speech-Related Signs You&#8217;re at Risk of Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s study, published in 2024, continues their <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/alz.064029\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous research<\/a>, where they trained a model \u2013 using voice recordings from over 1,000 individuals \u2013 to accurately detect cognitive impairment.<\/p>\n<p>Their new algorithm was trained on transcribed audio recordings of 166 individuals with MCI, aged 63\u201397.<\/p>\n<p>As the team already knew who had developed Alzheimer&#8217;s, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Machine_learning\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">machine learning<\/a> approach could be used to find signs in their transcribed speech that linked the 90 people whose cognitive function would decline into Alzheimer&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Once trained, the algorithm could then be applied in reverse: to try and predict Alzheimer&#8217;s risk from transcripts of speech samples it had never processed before.<\/p>\n<p>Other important factors, including age and self-reported sex, were added to produce a final predictive score.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/YearsToAlzheimersFromMCI.jpg\" alt=\"A graph with blue columns \" width=\"642\" height=\"442\" class=\"size-full wp-image-145445\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Number of MCI patients transitioning to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease (AD) annually over six years. (Amini et al., <a href=\"https:\/\/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/alz.13886\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer&#8217;s &amp; Dementia<\/a>, 2024)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can think of the score as the likelihood, the probability, that someone will remain stable or transition to dementia,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2024\/new-ai-program-could-predict-alzheimers-disease\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> computer scientist Ioannis Paschalidis from Boston University, when the results were published in June last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to predict what would happen in the next six years \u2013 and we found we can reasonably make that prediction with relatively good confidence and accuracy. It shows the power of AI.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Considering there&#8217;s currently no cure for Alzheimer&#8217;s, you might wonder what the benefit of detecting it early is \u2013 but we do have treatments that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/alzheimers-dementia\/treatments\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can help manage Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> to some extent, and these can be started earlier.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, early detection gives us more opportunity to study the disease and its progression, and from there develop a fully effective treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Those known to be likely to develop Alzheimer&#8217;s can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/major-alzheimers-trial-shows-new-drug-can-slow-disease-progression\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">participate in clinical trials<\/a> ahead of time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/PredictingAlzheimersFromSpeech.jpg\" alt=\"Gaphic of the automated pipeline for Alzheimer's disease prediction from a neuropsychological test interview.\" width=\"642\" height=\"262\" class=\"size-full wp-image-145446\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The prediction process. It&#8217;s the sort of test that could be done quickly and inexpensively, even at home, and without any specialist equipment.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t need any injections or samples, just a recording, and it could even be run through a smartphone app in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you can predict what will happen, you have more of an opportunity and time window to intervene with drugs, and at least try to maintain the stability of the condition and prevent the transition to more severe forms of dementia,&#8221; Paschalidis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2024\/new-ai-program-could-predict-alzheimers-disease\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The recordings used here were rather rough and of low quality.
