Players had a strong crosswind that was blowing down the valley from Addingham for much of the day, but 24-year-old Bahia had his ducks in order in defeating Newcastle’s Harry Scott 6-4, 6-1.

“I served well in the second set,” said former University of Leeds economics student Bahia, who is seeded 14th in qualifying for the men’s singles.

He now faces Ryan Szeto (Durham & Cleveland), who won the Lexus British boys’ 14 and under singles title last year.

However, it was a day to forget for 33-year-old Paul Johnson, who is assistant tennis coach at Leeds Beckett University and head coach at Roundhay Tennis Club.

The 18th seed played a very below-par final set match tie-break to lose 7-6, 3-6, 10-2 to Tony Stefanov, who has recent experience of junior international tournaments.

Among the women, Pontefract’s Evie Parkin progressed when her opponent Raquelle Medeleanu retired with a knee injury when trailing 6-4, 3-1.

The 17-year-old, who trains at Goole and plays at Wetherby, today faces ninth seed Martha Ground, 16, in the final round of qualifying.

York-based players had mixed fortunes in women’s qualifying.

Amelia Baranska and Eva Moss both triumphed in first-round matches, but Isabella Swanborough was edged out in a similar scoreline to Baranska.

Baranska and her opponent Phoebe Katharina Spyridopoulos coped better than most with the crosswind in a battle of 16-year-olds.

The Heworth teenager was involved in a tense struggle against Newcastle-based Spyridopoulos, and edged it 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 in the final set match tie-break.

If that was good news for the All Saints Catholic School pupil, who wants to go into tennis full-time after enjoying a life-changing experience at an American college, the opposite happened to another 16-year-old from York on an adjacent court.

Fulford School pupil Isabella Swanborough battled back against 15-year-old Ava Heslop, but the South Shields girl, who wants to become a journalist, came through another close battle 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 despite struggling with her serve late on, ripping a forehand winner down the line to clinch it.

A third York teenager, 17-year-old Ava Moss, had to show patience to overcome Emily Marshall, 18, from Milton Keynes.

Moss had to force the pace nearly all the match, which was frustrating when she set the point up but missed the last shot, but continued to be brave and won 6-3, 6-3 to book a contest against Sophie Munks, the fifth seed in qualifying, who had a first-round bye.

Baranska’s reward is a match against Alexandra Nedyalkova.

Players had a strong crosswind that was blowing down the valley from Addingham for much of the day,…

[38
101,118,56,54,55
post-715545","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-sports","tag-tennis","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
