Somerset currently sit at the top of Group A in the 2026 Metro Bank One Day Cup.<\/p>\n
One of the reasons for the success in the competition so far has been the form of Tom Lammonby.<\/p>\n
The 26-year-old is currently the leading run scorer in the tournament with 260 runs at an average of 86.66.<\/p>\n
We caught up with him at the Cooper Associates County Ground this week to discuss his productive start to the competition.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been very pleasing,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe Metro Bank One Day Cup squad seems to get a little bit younger each year and it\u2019s a great competition for showcasing a lot of young talent and also trying to mix that with a bit of experience. I think that\u2019s one of the roles I\u2019ve been trying to take up this year. I want to use that bit more experience to hopefully try and show the newer lads the ins and outs of the Metro Bank and professional cricket in general.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m 26 now, so I still feel quite young, but when you look around the changing room and you\u2019re one of the older heads, it is a strange position to be in. I think that also adds a bit of pressure on me in a good way to be accountable and set the standards for how we want to play the cricket we play. I think my role is to set the standards across all three facets. Hopefully, I\u2019ll be able to return to bowling over the next few games and can hopefully be a bit more of an experienced head in that department as well.\u00a0It\u2019s been a positive start and I\u2019m just very, very happy to be out there on the park playing.<\/p>\n
Despite the volume of runs, is he frustrated that he hasn\u2019t converted his three big scores into a century?<\/p>\n
\u201cDefinitely! I think you always look at the what-ifs and at what you can do better. I think I\u2019ve been pretty controlled so far and I\u2019ve managed to keep the run rate ticking over and helped to set a big platform for us to finish off strongly with the bat. But, you know, it\u2019s a bit frustrating getting out when you\u2019re just about to unleash or let the reins off. I\u2019m really wanting to complete an innings, go all the way through and try and have a big match winning score at the end of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

List A cricket is a format that has seen good success for the Club over the years. Is Somerset\u2019s history within the format something that the current squad are aware of?<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s part of the DNA here,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhen you\u2019re on the Academy, you\u2019re aware of the great players who have come before you. Now is our turn and there\u2019s definitely that awareness of how fruitful the competition has been for the Club in the past. Everyone is also aware of how strong a white ball team we\u2019ve been for the last few years as well, so I think history plays a big part. It\u2019s about taking it into our own hands now.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe competition over the last few years has been a great stepping stone for our younger players to come into the professional game so we are aware of the history but we\u2019re also aware of how important it is for the future as people bed into professional cricket as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

What does Tom put his good form so far in the competition down to?<\/p>\n
\u201cI think a bit of it would probably be down to hunger. I\u2019ve had a very up and down year with injuries and not being able to perform to the level that I want, so I think a bit of it is hunger and a bit of it is fight from missing a large part of the season due to injury. I want to make up for lost time and so far that\u2019s paying dividends. I\u2019m just trying to do the basics for as long as possible and control impulses that sometimes get thrown around in there. I just want to help the team because being sat on the sidelines has been really frustrating.\u201d<\/p>\n
Does the 2026 squad have what it takes to do well in the competition?<\/p>\n
\u201cI think so. I definitely think we\u2019ve got the talent, and we\u2019ve shown over the last few games that we can beat some good teams. We know we can do it, we just need to be smart in the decisive and defining moments because that\u2019s what will determine the outcome of games.\u201d<\/p>\n
Somerset\u2019s next home match in the Metro Bank One Day Cup is on Friday August 7th when we take on Surrey.<\/p>\n
This match will also see us host the Somerset Introducing Music Festival, which will be headlined by Supersonic Queen.<\/p>\n
