While many streaming shows are attempting to narrow the yawning gaps between seasons, some including Apple TV\u2019s hit Severance are not.<\/p>\n
Despite previously saying the show wanted to reduce the almost three-year gap between seasons, a new update says that the next season of Severance is, once again, going to take barely under three years, if timelines hold.<\/p>\n
Apple has announced <\/a>that production has begun on Severance season 3, just a few days before the end of July. There was previously some hope that filming would begin earlier, back in March, when star Adam Scott said filming would start \u201cvery soon.\u201d You would imagine \u201cvery soon\u201d might have been April, but instead it\u2019s almost August.<\/p>\n The late July date actually lines up with what actor John Turturro said before Scott\u2019s interview, which Deadline <\/a>reported. <\/p>\n As for the release date? The math is awful. From the last time I had to calculate this:<\/a><\/p>\n Severance season 1 and Severance season 2 had a 35-month gap between them, nearly three years, between February 18 2022 and January 17, 2025.If Severance season 3 is starting to film in July 2026, that is 18 months after season 2 ended, an enormous span of time.Severance season 2 was filmed over about six months, ending in April 2024 (there was a large gap of time carved out due to strikes), then there were eight months of post-production.So, July 2026 + 6 months of filming + 8 months of post-production = September 2027 for a likely release date. That is two years and eight months after season 2 aired, just under three years yet again.<\/p>\n It is extremely frustrating that shows like Severance keep doing this. We\u2019re also in the same boat with Pluribus, another high-concept Apple TV sci-fi series whose creator, Vince Gilligan, essentially laughed off the idea it was starting production any time soon after the show aired. A two-and-a-half to three-year wait for that show is also likely, and this time there are no promises the producers are trying to cut the wait time.<\/p>\n Netflix, of all places, is starting to do a better job of producing new seasons quicker. After a seemingly interminable break for Wednesday, which saw a dramatic drop for season 2 viewership, the show spooled up production on season 3 right after the second season was streaming.
