Health officials have confirmed that a hepatitis A outbreak in Barry is still ongoing, as fresh advice has been issued to help prevent further spread of the virus.<\/p>\n
The outbreak was first reported in May, when Public Health Wales wrote to parents and carers of children attending primary schools in Barry urging them to ensure they and their children practised good hand hygiene<\/a> to reduce the risk of infection.<\/p>\n Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver. It is usually spread through close contact with an infected person or by consuming contaminated food or water. While symptoms can vary, most people make a full recovery without any long-term health problems.<\/p>\n Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has now confirmed that the outbreak in Barry is ongoing, with Public Health Wales working alongside partners to manage it.<\/p>\n However, Public Health Wales continues to stress that Barry remains safe to visit and that there is no increased risk associated with travelling to the town. Public Health Wales is continuing to work as part of the outbreak control team to undertake all routine public health measures, including tracing the contacts of confirmed cases and offering advice, support and vaccination where appropriate.<\/p>\n “Good hand hygiene remains one of the most effective ways to prevent hepatitis A from spreading. People should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water, particularly after using the toilet and before preparing or eating food. It remains perfectly safe to visit Barry, and there is no increased risk associated with visiting the town.<\/p>\n “Anyone contacted by Public Health Wales and offered vaccination is strongly encouraged to take up that offer.
