Jordan Henderson has emerged as a surprise target for Chelsea and an exit from Brentford looks set to happen this summer.<\/p>\n

The England<\/a> international midfielder only joined the Bees<\/a> last season, but he could now be on his way out on a free deal.<\/p>\n

But how is that the case, considering Henderson<\/a> still has one year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium?<\/p>\n

Well, it all comes down to an informal understanding agreed to by the club regarding a move away if an opportunity came up.<\/p>\n

And now Chelsea are interested<\/a>, they could end up signing the former Liverpool<\/a> captain without having to pay a fee…<\/p>\n

Why is Henderson able to leave for free? <\/p>\n

talkSPORT understands that Henderson can leave Brentford for free due to an agreement made with owner Matt Benham.<\/p>\n

The gentleman’s agreement allows him to depart before the end of his contract at the club, which will be up in 2027.<\/p>\n

No official clause is in his deal, but the stance remains, with all parties from day one verbally agreeing to the free exit.<\/p>\n

Benham and Brentford are expected to honour their promise to Henderson if the chance to leave arises.<\/p>\n

Chelsea<\/a>‘s approach could now provide that opportunity.<\/p>\n

It’s understood that Henderson is keen on the transfer to Stamford Bridge ahead of the new Premier League<\/a> season.<\/p>\n

Permission has been given for him to make the move.<\/p>\n

Henderson becoming a target for Chelsea came out of nowhere on Monday, considering he is now 36 years old.<\/p>\n

And with the Blues also pushing for Danny Welbeck<\/a>, many fans across the country were left in shock at their new strategy.<\/p>\n

Xabi Alonso<\/a> appears to be looking for leadership and veteran players<\/a> rather than bringing in their usual young signings.<\/p>\n

Welbeck, aged 35, is expected to complete his move to Stamford Bridge from Brighton later this week.<\/p>\n

Then Henderson could well be the next through the door, with Alonso surprising many with his latest business.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the signing of Henderson, talkSPORT host and Chelsea fan Rory Jennings said: “I think what we need to do is bring in some standards for sure. <\/p>\n

“I don’t think Jordan Henderson is the right answer. I quite like Henderson. I don’t necessarily rate him, but I quite like him.<\/p>\n

“I think what he did for Liverpool was an integral part of their success. He was an integral part of everything that Jurgen Klopp<\/a> built.”<\/p>\n

He added: “I’m not convinced that Jordan Henderson is the answer. I’m not convinced that he’s ready to play at this level. <\/p>\n
