Fridays are movie night on BBC Two as BBC Film announces a British Film Premiere season focused on talented writer\/directors, including five breakthrough films from new exciting filmmakers all made in partnership with the BFI. The season celebrates writer\/directors offering fresh perspectives, through their varied lenses, on life in the UK. Set and shot around the UK in rural Yorkshire, city centre London, industrial North Wales, Edinburgh, Oxford and the Isle of Lewis with covering genres as wide ranging as horror, musical rom com, psychological thriller, dark comedy, social realism, surreal fantasy and historical folk drama, there\u2019s something for everyone in this curated season of British films.<\/p>\n

Eva Yates, Director of BBC Film, said: \u201cWith this season, we are delighted to celebrate the creative vision of these filmmakers presenting the UK and the wider world in unexpected, engaging and exciting ways. Included are five debut directors, fresh new forces in British genre filmmaking, who make us excited for what they will bring to the screen next.\u201d<\/p>\n

British Film Premiere will present a brand new premiere on each Friday night of the season on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer. The eight feature films in this latest British Film Premiere season were all supported by BBC Film, the feature filmmaking arm of the BBC. They are:<\/p>\n

Chuck Chuck Baby<\/p>\n

Premiere: Friday 31 July<\/p>\n

Chuck Chuck Baby, directed by Janis Pugh<\/p>\n

Chuck Chuck Baby, described by The Observer as a \u201cjoyous singalong celebration of female friendship\u201d, is the debut feature film from acclaimed writer\/director Janis Pugh, a cohort of Screen International\u2019s \u2018Stars of Tomorrow\u2019.<\/p>\n

Set in present day in industrial North Wales, Chuck Chuck Baby, starring Louise Brealey, Annabel Scholey and Sorcha Cusack, is a film of love, loss and music set amongst the falling feathers of a chicken factory. The film had its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and was the winner of two BAFTA Cymru Awards for Best Feature and Best Breakthrough (for Janis Pugh).<\/p>\n

Hoard<\/p>\n

Premiere: Friday 7 August<\/p>\n

Hoard, directed by Luna Carmoon<\/p>\n

Hoard\u00a0is the feature debut of writer\/director Luna Carmoon, described by the New York Times as \u201ca brilliantly strange new visionary\u201d. She was a \u2018BAFTA Breakthrough\u2019 and one of Screen International\u2019s \u2018Stars of Tomorrow\u2019.<\/p>\n

1984, London: 7-year-old Maria and her mother live in their own loving world built on sorting through bins and collecting shiny rubbish. One night, their world falls apart, and we join Maria a decade later, living with her foster mother. An older stranger, Michael, then enters their home, opening the door to past trauma, magic and madness.<\/p>\n

The film received its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it received three prizes, including the Audience Award and the Award for Most Innovative Film. Writer\/Director Luna Carmoon was BAFTA nominated for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer and the film received six BIFA nominations, including recognition for the performances of Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Hayley Squires and Jospeh Quinn. Luna Carmoon\u2019s second feature To Make Ends Meat, developed and backed by BBC Film, and starring Naomi Ackie, Alison Oliver, \u00c9anna Hardwicke, Armande Boulanger, shot in the UK during the spring of 2026 and is currently in post-production.<\/p>\n

On Falling<\/p>\n

Premiere: Friday 14 August<\/p>\n

On Falling,\u00a0directed by Laura Carreira<\/p>\n

On Falling was written and directed by Laura Carreira in her feature film debut. Carreira, described by Indiewire as \u201can emotionally sophisticated new master of social realism\u201d, was selected as a \u2018BAFTA Breakthrough\u2019 and for Screen International\u2019s \u2018Rising Stars Scotland\u2019 spotlight. Telling the story of Aurora, a Portuguese warehouse picker working in a vast fulfilment centre in Scotland, On Falling is an intimate and unwavering portrait of an isolated migrant and her relationship to the precarious labour that constrains and defines her.<\/p>\n

On Falling had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and its European premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival where it won the Silver Shell for Best Director. The film also won the Sutherland Award at the BFI London Film Festival, was awarded the Discovery Award for Best European Debut at the European Film Awards, won a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Film and received four BIFA nominations, including for Best Debut Writer and Best Debut Director.<\/p>\n

Silent Roar\u00a0<\/p>\n

Premiere: Friday 21 August<\/p>\n

Silent Roar,\u00a0directed by Johnny Barrington<\/p>\n

Silent Roar\u00a0is the feature film debut of writer\/director Johnny Barrington, described by Variety as \u201ca director to watch\u201d. He received a BAFTA nomination for his short film \u2018Tumult\u2019 and was a Screen International \u2018Rising Stars Scotland\u2019 honouree.<\/p>\n

On the island of Lewis, Scotland, Dondo, a young surfer, refuses to accept the death of his fisherman dad, despite being missing at sea for over a year. Unlike quiet and dreamy Dondo, his clever classmate Sas, is never afraid of rubbing people up the wrong way. Dondo and Sas\u2019 unlikely bond will help them find their path in their rural community, through waves, beliefs, and hellfire. Silent Roar, which stars Louis McCartney, Ella Lily Hyland and Mark Lockyer, was the opening night film for the Edinburgh International Film Festival.<\/p>\n

Tuesday<\/p>\n

Premiere: Friday 28 August<\/p>\n

Tuesday,\u00a0directed by Daina O. Pusi\u0107<\/p>\n

Writer\/Director Daina O. Pusi\u0107, described by Deadline as \u201ca filmmaker who is undoubtedly one to look out for in the coming years\u201d, presents her feature film debut\u00a0Tuesday which stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lola Petticrew. A mother and her teenage daughter must confront Death when it arrives in the form of an astonishing talking bird.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tuesday is a heart-rending fairy tale about the echoes of loss and finding resilience in the unexpected. The film received its world premiere as part of the Telluride Film Festival and its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.<\/p>\n

Harvest\u00a0<\/p>\n

Premiere: Friday 4 September<\/p>\n

Harvest,\u00a0directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari<\/p>\n

Athina Rachel Tsangari directs\u00a0Harvest, which she co-wrote with Joslyn Barnes and which stars Caleb Landry Jones and Harry Melling. The film, described by Variety as \u201cbrawny, brutal, beautiful\u201d, is based on the Booker Prize winning novel by Jim Crace. Over seven hallucinatory days, a village with no name, in an undefined time, disappears.<\/p>\n

Harvest is a neo-Western about townsman-turned-farmer Walter Thirsk benevolent lord of the manor Charles Kent, childhood friends about to face an invasion from the outside world: the trauma of modernity. The film received its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it was In Competition for the Golden Lion.<\/p>\n

Club Zero<\/p>\n

Premiere: Friday 11 September<\/p>\n

Club Zero,\u00a0directed by Jessica Hausner<\/p>\n

Club Zero, described by Variety as \u201csupremely audacious\u201d, is the second English-language feature from producer\/writer\/director Jessica Hausner, who co-wrote the screenplay with G\u00e9raldine Bajar. The film stars Mia Wasikowska, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Elsa Zylberstein, Mathieu Demy and Amir El-Masry.<\/p>\n

Miss Novak joins the staff of an international boarding school to teach a \u2018conscious eating\u2019 class. She instructs that eating less is healthy. The other teachers are slow to notice what is happening and by the time the distracted parents begin to realise, Club Zero has become a reality. For its world premiere, the film was In Competition at the Cannes Film Festival and went on to win the European Film Award for European Original Score.<\/p>\n

Starve Acre<\/p>\n

Premiere: Friday 18 September<\/p>\n

Starve Acre,\u00a0directed by Daniel Kokotajlo<\/p>\n

Starve Acre\u00a0is a British folk horror film and the second feature from writer\/director and BAFTA nominee Daniel Kokotajlo, noted by Time Out as \u201cclearly a talent to be reckoned with\u201d. The film is based upon the novel by Andrew Michael Hurley and stars Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark.<\/p>\n

1970s, rural England. Richard and Juliette’s seemingly idyllic family life is thrown into turmoil when their son Ewan starts acting out of character, creating an insurmountable wedge between the once happy couple.\u00a0Starve Acre received its world premiere In Competition for the Sutherland Trophy at the BFI London Film Festival.<\/p>\n
