{"id":717332,"date":"2026-07-29T13:41:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T13:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/717332\/"},"modified":"2026-07-29T13:41:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T13:41:10","slug":"orchids-growing-near-river-tees-to-be-relocated-to-nature-reserve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/717332\/","title":{"rendered":"Orchids growing near River Tees to be relocated to nature reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">About 200 dormant orchids are being relocated to a new nature reserve to safeguard their future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The orchids at Greenabella Marsh, near the Tees estuary, are to be transported and replanted at specially selected locations within the RSPB Saltholme nature reserve in Stockton-on-Tees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The marsh is set to become an intertidal habitat as part of the Environment Agency&#8217;s plan for flood alleviation in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Senior manager at RSPB Saltholme, Chris Francis, said every single orchid would be &#8220;carefully moved by hand&#8221; in a &#8220;remarkably delicate conservation operation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said: &#8220;There are never any guarantees when moving wild plants, but we&#8217;ve selected habitats where they have the very best chance of thriving. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;If visitors are able to enjoy these orchids flowering here for many years to come, it will be a wonderful conservation success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Each orchid will be dug up by hand and their underground tubers will be carefully cleaned and transported to their new homes the same day. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Seeds will also be collected and sowed at the receptor sites, helping to safeguard the colourful native plants for the enjoyment of generations to come.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"About 200 dormant orchids are being relocated to a new nature reserve to safeguard their future.
