A man cheated the NHS<\/a> out of \u00a3170,000 by pretending to have a high-ranking job in Coventry<\/a>. Amran Hussain landed 13 non-clinical NHS<\/a> roles by fraudulently misrepresenting himself.<\/p>\n

Hussain was exposed after securing a senior role at the Devon Partnership NHS Trust (DPT) in 2021. He claimed in his application that he was employed as Director of Transformation and Improvement at the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust<\/a> (CWPT).<\/p>\n

Enquiries by the Devon Partnership NHS Trust found no record of his claimed position and the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust later confirmed that it had never employed Hussain. He was found to have used fake references in support of his job applications.<\/p>\n

One referee was found to be entirely fictitious, while other references were connected to NHS<\/a> email accounts that he had access to or control over, as previously reported by CoventryLive<\/a>. He also claimed to hold MSc degrees from the University of Oxford and Birkbeck, University of London.<\/p>\n

Hussain also stated that he held memberships with several professional bodies, including the Institute of Directors and the Chartered Management Institute. He was found to have submitted applications for 2,071 NHS<\/a> posts and secured 13 fraudulent roles that resulted in a financial loss of \u00a3168,072.<\/p>\n

Shortly after taking up the positions, he would go off sick and remain absent until his contract ended or his employment was terminated. He frequently undertook little or no duties and did not acquire the skills or knowledge outlined in his applications.<\/p>\n

Hussain was sentenced to four years in prison on July 24. He previously admitted three counts of fraud by false representation during a hearing at Maidstone Crown Court.<\/p>\n

Ben Harrison, Head of Operations at the NHS<\/a> Counter Fraud Authority, said: \u201cHussain engaged in a sustained pattern of fraud, repeatedly misrepresenting his experience and qualifications to secure senior roles he was not entitled to hold. Thanks to robust checks by NHS<\/a> employers and the thorough work of NHSCFA investigators, this wrongdoing was uncovered and brought before the courts.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch behaviour undermines trust in NHS<\/a> recruitment processes and diverts public money away from frontline services. We will continue to work closely with NHS<\/a> organisations to strengthen recruitment controls, protect public funds and ensure those who abuse the system are held to account.\u201d<\/p>\n
