Given how Free were so unfortunate not to follow up on their early promise of becoming one of Britain\u2019s most talented rock acts of the late 1960s and early \u201870s, it only seems fair that their spiritual successors, Bad Company<\/a>, would give two of their members a second chance at stardom when they emerged with their debut album in 1974.<\/p>\n It probably helped that it wasn\u2019t just Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke on board, with the addition of Mott the Hoople\u2019s Mick Ralphs<\/a> and King Crimson\u2019s Boz Burrell rounding out the original lineup with their talent and experience. Although nothing they did eclipsed the success of \u2018All Right Now\u2019, Bad Company\u2019s longer stint in the spotlight arguably gave them a better chance at cementing their status in the annals of rock and roll, and they\u2019re rightfully recognised as one of the finest rock acts of the 1970s.<\/p>\n The band\u2019s self-titled debut album and its lead single, \u2018Can\u2019t Get Enough\u2019, demonstrated that they were looking to pick up where Free left off after their collapse, and their rapid-fire follow-up, Straight Shooter, produced another massive single in \u2018Feel Like Makin\u2019 Love\u2019, both of which saw them enter the top 10 in the US. However, one song that stands out from the early period of the band is one that remarkably became a radio staple despite not having an official release as a single.<\/p>\n \u2018Shooting Star\u2019 rounds out the first half of Straight Shooter, and is a solid example of their talents in terms of its bold rock songwriting. However, what really stands out about the song is not the performances, but more to do with Rodgers\u2019 storytelling abilities.<\/p>\n The song follows a protagonist named Johnny, who is inspired to become a rock star after hearing The Beatles\u2019 1963 hit \u2018She Loves You\u2019<\/a> on the radio. Unfortunately, in his pursuit of fame and fortune, he doesn\u2019t manage to reach the same lofty heights that his idols did, and instead winds up falling victim to the trappings of stardom, spiralling out of control in a world of drink and drug abuse before losing his life.<\/p>\n Not only is the fact that the character was inspired to pursue music through a love of The Beatles an entirely believable and frequently repeated story that can be applied to so many real people who made it in music, but his eventual fate is also an unfortunately realistic depiction of how many other rock stars have met their maker. <\/p>\n Given this, there has been plenty of speculation over the years as to whose life the song is based on, or whether it was intended to be a complete work of fiction, and during a 2011 interview with Guitar World, Rodgers confessed that he\u2019d based the tale on the misfortunes of not one, but multiple tragic rock stars who left the world too soon.<\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/p>\n
