{"id":718629,"date":"2026-07-30T06:43:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T06:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/718629\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T06:43:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T06:43:14","slug":"loving-your-body-in-a-world-where-weight-stigma-helps-sell-glp-1-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/718629\/","title":{"rendered":"Loving your body in a world where weight stigma helps sell GLP-1 drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Whether you&#8217;re living in a body that&#8217;s large or small, the rise of GLP-1 advertising and its use as a weight-loss drug can give rise to big feelings and opinions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Social media is awash with before-and-after weight-loss content and pushy marketing from companies selling the drugs, using <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/health\/2025-10-23\/novo-nordisk-eli-lilly-accused-of-unethical-advertising\/105888282\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105888282\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">advertising tactics labelled &#8220;unethical&#8221; by some health professionals.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the same time, experts say there are genuine medical reasons to take GLP-1s for weight loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Weight-bias expert and host of the US podcast, GLP-1 Truth Serum, Virgie Tovar, says for some people there&#8217;s a cost to coping in the GLP-1 era, which she believes is &#8220;aggressively anti-body positivity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A portrait of a woman wearing striking red glasses and a white blazer.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/eb5c747ea3a447fabc8d4dd9bea6a5b5.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Virgie Tovar runs corporate training on weight bias in the United States. (Supplied: Andria Lo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She says a recent weight-loss ad caused her to abandon her weekend plans to spend time at a pool as a distraction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[The ad] really, really, truly upset me,&#8221; she says. &#8220;I just needed something that \u2026 was going to completely take me out of my brain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Tovar, who lives in San Francisco, California, is someone who experiences weight bias and also has an eating disorder history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If you have vulnerabilities to this kind of messaging \u2026 these are real costs that add up,&#8221; Ms Tovar says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Even if you&#8217;re not spending money, like I did on the pool pass, you&#8217;re spending time, you&#8217;re spending energy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Our experts:Virgie Tovar, trainer\/educator on weight-based discrimination and author of You Have the Right to Remain Fat, The Self-Love Revolution and The Body Positive JournalDr Emma Beckett, registered nutritionist and senior lecturer in nutrition and food science at the Australian Catholic UniversityProfessor Gemma Sharp, clinical psychologist and body image, eating, and weight disorder researcher with Adelaide University&#8217;s School of PsychologyWeight stigma and diet culture in new packaging<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Emma Beckett \u2014 food and nutrition scientist and self-described &#8220;chonky&#8221; person from Eora\/Sydney \u2014 says anecdotally, for larger people, the choice to use GLP-1 drugs can feel like a &#8220;lose-lose&#8221; situation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/health\/2025-03-07\/ozempic-wegovy-semaglutide-food-noise-weight-loss\/104978348\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How Ozempic works in the brain to help people lose weight<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">People on Ozempic and other GLP-1 agonist drugs commonly report they no longer have constant, incessant thoughts about food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People in larger bodies just absolutely cannot win \u2026 if we stay fat, we&#8217;re told that our fatness is the problem. If we lose weight, we&#8217;re told that our weight loss is the problem,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Beckett herself was an early user of Ozempic, which she took to lose weight in order to relieve chronic pain that was preventing her from exercising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;m trained in biomedical science \u2026 and a lot of my research has been on nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics, looking at how genetic differences change the way we interact with food,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I always knew that I experienced food differently to other people. No-one has ever asked [me]\u2026 &#8216;Do I think it&#8217;s reasonable that people take blood pressure medications?'&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The only reason we are having this conversation is \u2026 this particular medication leads to a change in something that you can visibly see.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Kaurna country\/Adelaide-based clinical psychologist and professor Gemma Sharp, whose research at Adelaide University is centred around body image, eating, and weight disorders, says weight stigma existed long before GLP-1 drugs, and there is strong evidence that it leads to &#8220;negative health consequences&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Like Dr Beckett, she says GLP-1 weight-loss drugs are not the enemy and is an advocate for their use where medically appropriate and supported by wraparound care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, she isn&#8217;t a fan of some of the marketing strategies used to sell them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They rely upon people having poor body image in order to sell products,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the end of the day, &#8220;weight stigma is a major social ill&#8221; that affects people of all sizes, Ms Tovar says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">So how can you hold onto hard-won or developing body positivity, or acceptance, in spite of it?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A group of thin women posed with small hand weights in a dance studio.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/0f5e94127dd9885d268962b06e138e93.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Diet culture a decade ago was very &#8220;spandexy&#8221;, Virgie Tovar says. (Unsplash)<\/p>\n<p>Get good at spotting adverts for diet-culture<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Tovar says diet culture in the era of GLP-1 drugs doesn&#8217;t look like it did in 2016, when it was &#8220;very spandexy&#8221; and all about &#8220;thin, female bodies packaged in a very particular way&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But the good news is \u2026 just like we all became good at spotting it then, we can do that again,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Develop a simple phrase like, &#8216;This is an ad, not the truth&#8217; \u2026 It&#8217;s like a protective act.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">We want to know about how you&#8217;ve learned to love or accept your body. (Supplied: Gemma Sharp)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Putting some space between you and that kind of content is a great thing to do,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She also suggests setting boundaries &#8220;if there&#8217;s someone who is constantly making comments about your body&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Because we know that weight shaming can occur anywhere: the doctor&#8217;s office, friends, family, et cetera.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Similarly, Ms Tovar says if there&#8217;s someone in your life who wants to talk about their own weight loss with you and it feels unhelpful, don&#8217;t be afraid to set boundaries here too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If your boundary is, &#8216;I respect your choice, I don&#8217;t want to hear about your weight loss&#8217; \u2026 you have every right for that boundary to be respected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s OK to have big feelings<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Tovar says right now, people living in larger bodies are being asked to show significant compassion and respect for the autonomy of people using GLP-1 drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And there&#8217;s no commensurate demand that we understand the GLP-1 environment is \u2026 potentially compromising the mental health [and] eating disorder recovery of vulnerable people, [or] that people who choose not to take GLP-1s also are exercising body autonomy and choice,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As an example, Ms Tovar says she felt &#8220;really hurt&#8221; when a person in her life who was once proud to live in a larger body used GLP-1 drugs to lose weight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t help but go to the place of, &#8216;Wow, my body is your worst nightmare&#8217; \u2026 Some people say it&#8217;s an overstatement.
