Marvel<\/a> and Sony<\/a> placated fan demands for Spider-Man<\/a>: Brand New Day by making a cut that fulfilled their wishes \u2013 but Tom Holland<\/a> thought it was terrible.<\/p>\n

The franchise lead, who has played Peter Parker since 2017\u2019s Spider-Man: Homecoming, has returned in the fourth outing, and he revealed at the premiere that there were a variety of versions of the film made before settling on the one that\u2019s being released on Friday (31 July).<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s really interesting is, we\u2019ve seen loads of different cuts of this movie, and one of the cuts was, they took all of the notes from all of the random people that saw the film, and they changed the movie,\u201d the British actor, who also stars in blockbuster The Odyssey<\/a>, told Quotable<\/a>. <\/p>\n

However, when he and the film\u2019s producers and director Destin Daniel Cretton watched it, they \u201chated it\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt totally didn\u2019t work \u2013\u00a0and it\u2019s what the people were asking for,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it wasn\u2019t quite what we wanted as the creatives.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, he added that they \u201clearnt lessons from that experience\u201d, adding: \u201cA movie can change in a thousand different ways in the edit room.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holland previously revealed that he had to \u201clay down the law\u201d with Marvel and Sony after witnessing Christopher Nolan\u2019s efficient way of working on The Odyssey<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The actor told GQ that Nolan\u2019s level of preparation was unlike anything he\u2019s ever seen, which prompted him to tell Spider-Man: Brand New Day producers: \u201cWe are not going to come to set and figure it out; we need to know why we are making this movie beyond the fact that it\u2019s Spider-Man 4 and they make loads of money and we\u2019re going to just have a big summer. Why are we making this movie?\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cDestin was super instrumental in that, but it was just really great to constantly be calling up the studio and [producers] Amy [Pascal] and Rachel [O\u2019Connor], who I love, and be like, \u2018Well, Chris is doing it this way. This is how I think we should be doing it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Holland plays Telemachus, son of Odysseus (Matt Damon), in The Odyssey \u2013 but was only able to after asking Sony<\/a> to delay Brand New Day\u2019s production to free up his schedule.<\/p>\n

He said that after \u201ca very uncomfortable conversation\u201d with Sony, they agreed due to Nolan\u2019s good reputation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think one of the reasons why Sony were happy to move is because Chris has that reputation of, \u2018This movie isn\u2019t going to go five months over, and we aren\u2019t actually going to lose Tom for two years.\u2019 Any other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Holland, though, the decision meant that Cretton could develop the script to make it \u201cthe best version of any Spider-Man movie going\u201d, which he said \u201csaved\u201d it.<\/p>\n

The Independent\u2019s film critic Clarisse Loughrey<\/a> said the film was \u201cthe best Spider-Man movie in more than 20 years\u201d, writing: \u201cTom Holland\u2019s web-slinger has never been more authentic to the source material than in his fourth solo go-round, and the entire franchise is better for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
