Rolling Stone<\/a> has had a sneak preview of the track and describes it as \u201ca fragile, gorgeous, bittersweet little tune.\u201d It features nothing but Lennon\u2019s voice and acoustic guitar<\/a>. (Image credit: CBS via Getty Images)<\/p>\n The project\u2019s producer, Giles Martin, says the song\u2019s sudden emergence is \u201csurprising.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt came from the Lennon Estate \u2014 I think it was Sean,\u201d he tells Rolling Stone. \u201cIt was one of those things where they say, \u2018Oh, and then there\u2019s this.\u2019<\/p>\n You may like<\/p>\n \u201cLike with all that stuff, I wasn\u2019t sure whether people knew about it or not, or whether it was on YouTube,\u201d he adds. \u201cQuite often I\u2019ll find something and go, \u2018This is amazing.\u2019 Then someone goes, \u2018Yeah, it\u2019s on YouTube. Everybody knows about that.\u2019 I\u2019m always the last person to know.\u201d<\/p>\n In this instance, it really is a diamond in the rough. Discovered on a Lennon tape reel, Martin ultimately spliced together two sections to complete the 2:17 recording.<\/p>\n Martin says discoveries like this satisfy fans\u2019 enduring appetite for unheard Beatles music.<\/p>\n \u201cApart from \u2018It\u2019s another song that would have made the album,\u2019 there\u2019s an insatiable desire for something more,\u201d he says. \u201cBut I think it\u2019s good to see all of the pencil drawings before you see the picture.\u201d<\/p>\n There\u2019s an insatiable desire for something more.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2014 Giles Martin<\/p>\n The exact origins of the song are still unknown, but Martin and his team have deduced that it can be no older than the summer of 1965, given that it includes a tweaked Paul McCartney hook later heard on the Help! track \u201cI\u2019ve Just Seen a Face.\u201d<\/p>\n What to read next<\/p>\n Yet the song\u2019s emergence from obscurity shouldn\u2019t be wholly surprising, given the mad-dash nature of Rubber Soul\u2019s creation. Much of the album was written in London following the band\u2019s U.S. tour in August 1965, with their marijuana-fueled encounters with Bob Dylan still fresh in their minds.<\/p>\n Their manager, Brian Epstein, and producer, George Martin, had agreed that another album in time for Christmas was good for business, despite Help! having been released only weeks earlier. The band scrambled to write new material, with many songs arriving at Abbey Road unfinished. Given those frantic circumstances, the idea that one composition slipped through the cracks \u2014 despite Beatlemania and the exhaustive documentation of the group\u2019s career \u2014 doesn\u2019t seem quite so far-fetched.<\/p>\n Some songs have already been rescued from those sessions, with the bluesy instrumental \u201c12-Bar Original\u201d eventually finding its way onto Anthology 2.<\/p>\n \n The Beatles attend a press reception after receiving their MBEs, October 26, 1965.
